It took me some years to appreciate his singing (it seemed more like shouting to me); in fact it was a harder nut to crack than Geddy Lee. But his vocal abilities cannot be denied, so I vote for option #2.

It's the reason I dislike VDGG so much.

If they'd been an instrumental band I'd have quite liked them. But I just hate his vocals.

Peter Hammill's voice is an acquired tast, and I did acquire it at some point. I love the band. Having just reviewed The Tea Club's Quickly Quickly Quickly, I cannot help but feeling that VDGG might have gone further than they already did with a technically better singer. Still - I love the band, and I can appreciate his voice as part of their music.

He's my favorite singer of all time. Full of passion and feelings and very expressive. very unique and strange voice. He had no boundaries. Just listen to "arrow" ,"in the black room" "betrayed" or "gog". Very extreme singing approach for the 70's...the only problem is that he's so unique that you can only "love or hate" him...personally love him. (Although he has really dissapoint me over the last 3 years but that's another discussion. maybe in another post...)

I love his singing as part of the overall sound of VdGG but find it more difficult to enjoy when solo with piano for example. Has seen him live both with VdGG and solo and again the solo voice seemed more extreme altnough it might just be the material he is playing?

Sure some people may not like it, but the beauty of it is the fact that it always elicits a strong reaction in the listener. It forces you to have an opinion. I believe the worst thing that could befall an artist is people having total indifference to their material. If that happens, they're totally forgotten. This will never happen to Hammill, nor should it.

qft, couldn't have said it better.

If VdGG had an all-instrumental album, I would certainly buy it.

I never thought of that! I think that's true. I like Hammil's voice, and find it strange that anyone would have an issue with it. I don't like their compositions, or what they do within them. The compositions seem to get stuck in a rut a lot. I'm more interested in the instrumental side anyway, too. And aside from the sax(es), that's where they are a bit weak.

Peter Hamill is a true artist; anything he does is interesting at the very least.

An all time favourite for sure. Love his voice - very raw, dynamic and full of drama.

He's ok, not amongst my favorites, but he dosent hurt either, but he is not what i find interesting about VDGG, its all about the arrangements.

Probably the last option. His voice has a many positions: pleasant and gentle voice is changing suddenly to rough, sometimes annoying shriek. I appreciate him as a great vocal equilibrist, but he isn't actually my favourite singer.

I just got into VDGG a few months ago, and I must say I have been enjoying Hamill's singing very much. Though I must admit that from time to time he can be a bit annoying and go a triffle bit to far. And I do believe that he has a very good voice, though he doesn't use it the "right way"... I guess he just uses it his own way.
