For me personally I think PH is great. Maybe not technically the greatest singer but he's just so full of raw emotion and passion and intensity that it makes up for any technical flaw he might have. I still don't get it when many people say he's bad or he sucks. Same thing when people say Carl Palmer can't keep time. I just don't hear it.

Raw emotion, passion, intensity - his range and tone are limitless.  He is my favourite singer of all time.  So very human, and the music he composes is beyond the beyond........AMAZING.  Actually, on the album 'A Grounding In Numbers' he does an incredible job - considering his age.  The song 'Highly Strung' is a pure classic.

He's the kind of guy that can totally carry a song.  I didn't like him as much at first but it was an acquired taste.  The skill with which he delivers the vocal, wrenching out all the nuance and meaning he can, it's must be physically draining.  It's his personality that's the one thing I like most about VdGG; and maybe unsurprisingly, I actually prefer his solo albums to his band albums because his personality shines through even more on those.

My favorite vocalist and band leader of all time, no questions asked. His voice has such power and depth of emotion. The outstandingly dark material he wrote and the fervor with which he delivered it from album to album, year to year, is truly a benchmark for prog. I can't praise his voice or music enough.

Sure some people may not like it, but the beauty of it is the fact that it always elicits a strong reaction in the listener. It forces you to have an opinion. I believe the worst thing that could befall an artist is people having total indifference to their material. If that happens, they're totally forgotten. This will never happen to Hammill, nor should it.

I really respect the passion that he pours into his singing but the way the emotions come out don't appeal to me.  It sounds far too dramatized and overwrought to me, the farthest thing from raw for me.

Hammill's singing is incredible.  It's the range, mostly - range and expressiveness.  He can croon, he can howl, he can whisper, he can wail, all while retaining that air of sophistication and passion that marks VdGG's unusual music.  But like the band itself, the man's voice is an acquired taste.

I find his singing so mannered, I think it fits perfectly what he does, I just can't listen to it for very long.

I love Hammill's vocal range and theatricality. I think Fish sounded much more like Hammill than Peter Gabriel.

I think it's the really theatrical and dramatic delivery that turns some people off
