This is deeply upsetting news. My condolences to Kevin's daughters. RIP old chap.

He was one of those guys I just expected to stick around forever, putting an album out every ten years or so, just kicking back and doing his thing.  It's sad to realize he won't be doing that anymore.

I went through a big Kevin Ayers stage around 2003-2004, and put him on my Myspace page shortly after as an influence, when it seems no one was really thinking of him much.  I wrote him a fan letter at that time and seemed to somehow get through, I think he had a webmaster or public internet spokesperson around then that told me, or it may have been just a guestbook he had at the time.  It was a long time ago now.  He really had a way of retaining that poetic purity and focusing on parts of the 60's and 70's thing that not a lot of other artists were able to verbalize well.

Wasn't expecting that today. Don't have a vast knowledge of his music but I do have Soft Machine III and Joy of a Toy, two albums I get a lot of enjoyment from. A very influential musician. RIP Heart

I feel a little guilty because I probably hadn't listened to any of his albums for a year or so.  But pulling them out again today, there are countless songs in there that have been a part of my life for what seems like forever.  He's brought me so much joy in my life, and has continually sparked my imagination as I wondered how anyone who wrote something as light as "Butterfly Dance" could then turn around and do something as thoroughly demented and evil as "Song From the Bottom of a Well".  He liked to experiment, but he liked to play it simple too.  He saw the world with the eyes of a child, and had the poetic gifts to let us see that world too.
