What is your favourite of Yes's first 10 albums and why?

I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Close to the Edge - the moment when it all took off. Top-notch playing, sonata-ish form, a side-long track, and Rick Wakeman gets his organ out. The most interesting, exciting progressive rock piece. Ever.

Then they do it again with And You And I.

Then they top it off with Siberian Khatru - a rhythm you can't beat, wonderful counterpoint, and they even squeeze in a harpsichord solo. And none of this boring old Ukrainian or Azerbaijani khatru either. Siberian khatru. Turn round, glider!

What more could one want?

I only own four of these, so I won't vote - but out of those four I choose Close to the Edge. A masterpiece.

Fragile gets my vote - ambitious but still grounded.

Close to the Edge is great too, but I hardly like Tales at all. Gates of Delirium is good, and some moments on Going for the One, but for the most part I think Bill Bruford had the right idea when he jumped ship after CTTE.

Drama is really good, though.

Apparently it is 100, unfortunately

Why can't I create polls or vote in existing ones?

Poll creation and voting is only available to forum members with higher ranks than Newbie. Once you've posted 100 messages on the forum, you'll be able to vote in prog polls. This was introduced on the forums to avoid people creating fake accounts to mess with the polls.

The Yes Album. Mostly because it feels so natural. A lot of what was to come had endless segments of complexity, and even if I like that sort of stuff, I still prefer the naive and fluid expression of The Yes Album.

Tales. 

Yes' great adventure for the listener.  They created a grand work that unlike so many albums cannot be easily assimilated after a few plays.  Decades later I still can be surprised pleasantly by something I'll hear in the background.  It also has a satisfying, almost spiritual component that makes me feel good.  Everyone's playing knocks me out, especially Howe. 

I've said all this before in these polls, but Tales is special so I'll say it one more time. Smile
