Most common is not enough thought process in the songwriting.

Rush went throught this in the mid 80's and they'll be the first ones to admit it. Peart did on the Gilded Cage vid.

Kind of sad when one says "I could've done a better guitar part than that! Lifeson sonunds weak"
Be well,

Dream Theater, with "Falling Into Infinity" although it seems it's not the kind of album they wanted too.

CD2 of "Twelve degrees...", because i can't stand JR's keyboard sounds in the Intro and Outro.

"Systematic Chaos" = i don't hear songs, just a concatenation of riffs.

Opeth since "Watershed"
Porcupine Tree with "The Incident"

It's like every band that signs to Roadrunner lose its spirit...

Reasons can be argued, but I was heartbroken when John Egan aka Champignon left Ozric Tentacles.

I lived in London for a year so I could go to Porcupine Tree shows and be there for Ozric's Pongmasters Ball.  John was the most welcoming and light hearted member of the band.  He didn't mind hanging with an American chic backstage and talking music.  Very cool guy.  As a fellow flautist, we had much to yap about.

On the plus side, I followed Champignon on to Dream Machine.  Big fan (obviously)....The Castle of A Thousand Universes is an amazing new release from DM.

I threw five clocks down on my bed
The chimes danced out on golden threads
And turned to footprints on my wall
Sequined Tears began to fall...

I still am a bit torn by when Kevin Moore left Dream Theater, but he did move on to create some great music so I can't be totally upset or let down about that.

Another would be D.C Cooper leaving Royal Hunt. Paradox 2 was a mediocre album And could have been so much better if he were with Royal Hunt at the time of making that album.

Chris Degarmo leaving Queensr˙che. It was a downward spiral as soon as he left the band.

At the time, Bruce Dickinson Leaving Iron Maiden in 1993. Virtual x1 was not a good album, but X factor was pretty good.

Fates Warning not making an album since 2004. I really miss their sound, but Redemption, John Arch and Arch/Matheos have tied me over from missing them a little bit.

RUSH---Making Test for Echo. Very porus record compared to other great bodies of work.

For me, various and sundry letdowns ended up being minor speed bumps along the road of life, although they didn't seem that way at the time.

Here are a few examples:

Dark Side of the Moon - The sound of Floyd selling out. I like the album and love much of what followed, but Floyd would never again be totally freaky. The world was thrilled with DSOTM, but those of us who knew Ummagumma were left speechless.

War Child - it was like jumping off a cliff after A Passion Play. And so began the Jethro Tull roller coaster.

Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis - It took a long time to warm up to A Trick of the Tail, which is now an album I absolutely love. Back in the day, I would scream every time I heard Robbery, Assault, and Battery.

And Then There Were Three - The end of a truly great run (Nursery Cryme-Wind and Wuthering).

Tormato - The end of another truly great run (The Yes Album-Going for the One). But the Yes tours at that time were nothing short of spectacular. I loved seeing them in the round.

Drama tour - The album was a lot of fun, but the concert I saw was not tight at all. The rotating stage couldn't save the performance.

Seeing Zappa during the Tinseltown Rebellion tour was just great; the next time I saw him he turned in a very short set and just seemed to be mailing it in. Seeing rock played with virtuosity but without any real energy is a curious experience.

The '80s were a real letdown (thanks, MTV), but the revitalized prog scene of the last 20 years has been wonderful and puts the ups and downs into perspective.

Genesis - Abacab (although I quite like the title track and Dodo/Lurker)
IQ - Nomzamo , I was pretty excited about the impending release of their third album but they might have told me they were doing an AOR album and leaving the dark emotional beauty of the previous two albums behind.
ELP - In The Hot Seat, what have you done with my favourite band?
Marillion - The Strange Engine , not terrible but I was getting bored and didn' buy another Marillion album for at least 10 years.
Muse - The Resistance , again not terrible but hardly a leap forward
Emerson, Lake and Powell - stop shouting Greg!

Can you think of any examples?

I might start with Yes thinking that Trevor Horn (ex-The Buggles) was a suitable replacement for Jon Anderson.

I never liked  Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON! I feel like screaming every time I hear MONEY! Then they hit THE WALL! Ouch

I prefer any PF album before DSOFTM.

If I may say, relating back to Queensr˙che, that I listened to their latest album minus Geoff Tate and I have to say that it isn't horrible at all. It's rather tolerable and I guess firing Tate was a good move because the band situation was growing to be really toxic, considering Tate's super-ego to creative control over everything!
Cutting the Tate cord probably should have been done years ago judging from the bands latest album effort.

As people know already I have loathed Queensr˙che's sound ever since after Promise land. It was thee most freaky, downward spiral I've ever witnessed in a prog band period.
Anyway, The Ryche have some new blood and resurgence with a concise 35min progressive power metal album, that could bring life back into the band and restore the name, Queensr˙che in prog metal again.

The album is not in any way good enough to have me forget Queensr˙che abysmal second half of their discography, but the latest effort is a step in the right direction. It's about freaking time!!

A great thing about seeing them in the round was if you brought in a camera you'd get everyone right in front of you a few times.  I was 4th row for the Tormato tour and got some great shots.

Another highlight of Yes in the round was the sound system. I saw them at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall that tour, and the combo of the round stage in a round auditorium and the JBL sound system made it just like hearing them out of a high-end stereo. It was a real ear-opener after years of hearing them live with that distinctive giant arena/stadium echo.

Boy....I can't say Fates Warning is letting me down right now. I'm very excited to hear their new album out in October! Almost ten years since their last album! This is gonna be a mighty resurrection indeed!

Think I got a classic case of foot in mouth disease. Lol

Outcry by Dream Theater. Just... Yuck
Counterparts by Rush. Just... Yuck haha
The 80's for Kansas. Gotta have Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh to be Kansas. and Robbie.

And Styx is just a HUGE disappointment to me. They're little more than a casino band these days and are just running on the fumes of the 70's. To tell you the truth, Tommy Shaw disappoints me all together.

Speaking of disappointment - Clockwork Angels is one of the worst Rush albums.
And the very bottom for Peart. Lyrically and musically boring and uninspired.
Crushed like a rose in the riverflow.
