Hey everyone,

I've decided that Hubardo is as good as Choirs of the Eye (10 out of f**king 10), but in a different way.  I feel that the two are towering pinnacles of what is musically possible, but because Hubardo is so much more "direct" musically than Choirs, I can't pick a winner.

I got them tattooed to my chest in reverse, so I can read them in the mirror.  Just kidding, but I printed them too

They're great lyrics as poetry, I just can't figure out what's supposed to be "going on".  Toby said there's some storyline there, I just can't find it in the words.

Yeah some of the specifics are foggy, but I love the subtle advantages of the lyrics being poetry.  For example, there's repetition of themes like planting, watering, growing and the fact that it's poetry about a poet.

Also, I looked it up and "Hubardo" means "lamp" or "lantern" in Enochian, and I think the idea is that the poet is being guided throughout the story.

My understanding of it:

The poet finds the meteor that fell, which the townspeople have denounced as evil. The poet thinks it's beautiful and takes it home (all this is covered by songs 1-4).  In song 5, Zlida Caosgi, it sounds like he is losing his sh*t, but I think the lyrics deal with the beginning of the "alchemical change" part of the story.  What is actually happening though is anyones guess.

Now, from this point on, it would make a lot more sense if everything was metaphorical (or on the astral plane or something... the point of it is that it's the most intimate, introverted, and transcendent space there is, which is the realm of poetry) for the poet's alchemical transformation, as triggered by the meteor.  In song 6, he goes to a secluded forest grove, and this is where the rest of the story takes place.  In song 7, The Second Operation, is the turning point and key phrase in the transformation process: "Before he learned the poet's truth that life will never yield to Will".  At this point, he finds the stream that grew in the grove, builds a boat and floats down the river.  In song 10 (Passing the River), I think the boy that is referred to is the poet himself, that he is being "reborn".  In the last song, The Wait of the World, he dies.

There's my take on it at this point, and I'd love to hear other interpretations or elaborations.

cuz of the army I had a bit of a problem doing an entire sit down.

I'd usually just listening to a couple of songs and them just listen to them again and again and let them process for a while, while reading the lyrics (totally printed themmmmmm)

point being I just really really sat on this album unlike I did with any other album in a long time

I'd like to see that taken down.  The album is available for purchase at bandcamp, with a few songs available to stream.

I don't want to get in a file sharing debate, but c'mon, Toby Driver isn't getting wealthy off this.  He's trying to cover costs and fund the making of this incredible music.  If we don't support independent artists they cease to exist.

Do the right thing.

What I love about this record is the shear intensity and diversity (quiet and heavy parts alike) that I never really felt since Dowsing, and Hubardo pulls off this quality better than Dowsing did. Another weird quality this album seems to have, is that it does NOT seem as long as it actually is. I was afraid the album was going to feel like it was dragging on, but in fact just the opposite is true. I think it is AOTY for me.
