Hie

just to share one of my odd pairing, I found Tom an Procol deal with many similar topics and genre styles, blues, see chanteys, symphonic, gypsy/romani people music  , chanson, jazz, baroque, and characteristic voices of the singers,

often dark and cabaret and theater influenced

do anyone else find similar elements or traits between Procol Harum and Tom Waits?

Come to think of it, Keith Reid's lyrics do often have a desperate, degenerate tone to them, as do Tom Waits' lyrics.  Especially when they sing about being drunk.

I'll pick Procol Harum. Waits is a supreme badass but I love Procol.

I chose both. But while I listened to Procol Harum more in the 70s and 80s, I've listened to Waits more in the past decade or so.

Love Procol, but Waits as an artist has an unbelievable discography of very consistent quality and with so much ground explored. He gets my vote.

Agreed. Procol Harum only ever released one album that I'm actually into...

Both carbon based mammalian lifeforms who sing in English? Just two of an infinite number of rock artists who have embraced soul, blues and R'N'B in their work?

Nope. I think yer just having' a laff.Wink
(maybe a poll Tom Waits vs Captain Beefheart would have been more credible?)

There's often guitar in their tunes as well as other rock instruments. Are those the similarities you're referring to Agi?Clown

Ahem, yeah I don't really hear any similarities between the two. Raspy cookie monster does experimental ramble tamble blues rock and then you've got the inventors of double cream rock with big orgiastic keys and triumphant almost heroic instrumental sections. Pretty long ways from each other methinks.

I choose the double cream btw.

1) dark lyrics, 2) albums feels like dark cabarettes , dark theaters, 3) i feel both should be regarded as influence to the Devil Dolls, ) any rock and metql act who use element from theatre and circus, often very heavy ibstrumned Diablo Swing Orchestra, i look to albums like Grand Hotel, Home and the afruit albums could/should be seen as stepping stones for the development of cirkus/avan garde metal of DSO and SGM and Unexpect .
