Two of the most impressive guitarists of the late 60s and all 70s whos style and tone sat a mark on how guitar should sound. A guitar forum website stated that Trower probably had the best vibrato in rock but Gilmour also knows how the vibrato works.

Close, as they are both heavily influenced by the blues!  However, I voted for Gilmour as the more progressive in his styling & voicing.

This cut is a good example Gilmour's progressive blues style....love this song!

Never heard the second, am I missing something? If so close to Gilmour it seems yes.

Trower was the original guitar player in Procol Harum (and he had a lengthy solo career after).
I prefer Gilmour, but Trower has a great style.

Both.

Trower is a bit more technically skilled but Gilmour has a slightly better feel; they're both excellent.

Gilmour.  Trower's tone is a wonder to behold - I saw him live and couldn't believe the tone control he had -  but Gilmour's is at least as good, and he has a bit more stylistic range.

Was Robin Trower the guy who thought Hendrix's soul was reincarnated in himself, or am I thinking of someone else?

Trower all the way here, not for his Procul Harem work but for his solo output.  Fantastic tones, awesome technique, tasty when he needs to be and fast when he wants it.

Trower is the more technically proficient guitarist whereas Gilmour is the icon. Preference wize I have to say Gilmour purely due to Pink Floyd however if this was about Gilmour's solo efforts vs Trower I would lean the other way.

That would be Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush. Love Trower, but his best work came on three albums. Gilmour has a lengthier resume of great songs.
