My three current favorites by the Swans are all live albums, very unusual for me (Swans Are Dead, Body to Body, and the latest live one with the long title). But of the studio albums, I'll go with The Seer.

Pretty tough to decide, but in the end I went with Children Of God. It was my introduction to the band, and it pretty much blew my mind back in the day. It's got a nice mix of everything, from the sparse, pretty and eerie "In My Garden" to the delirious insanity of "Beautiful Child".

I've only dabbled with a few of these releases and I like some of what I hear. On description alone it is a band I should like, but the crushing, hollow darkness and intense despair is a bit hard to deal with. I'm certainly not the sunniest guy on the planet, but if anyone of you could point me towards an album where the permafrost isn't quite so deep, I'd be most grateful.

It's not all crushing, but most of it is intense and it's frequently full of despair, or at least melancholic soul-searching. The first few on this list are the most "crushing", being largely made up of crashing percussion and dissonant guitars that sound like they're being thrown against a wall. The middle period (beginning with "Burning World") is just as emotional, but the music is much more heavenly and pretty, and the vocals aren't screamed, they're sung in a low croon (kind of like Nick Cave). The last few (beginning with "Soundtracks") seem to occupy yet another new ground that's closer to epic post-rock. These bring back some of the "crushing" but retain a lot of the beauty too.

Listened to it the other night. Think it might be the third time or so and that's definitely a Swans album I can enjoy
