Topic: Favorite Recorded Prog Drum Solos Posted: March 29 2013 at 11:01 |
What are your favorite prog drum solos on record, any period or sub genre, live or studio? Mine are listed below. This list is not to signify a definitive one including all great ones, just my own personal favorites, and not in any particular order. Mick Underwood in "Laughin' Tackle" from Quatermass debut Paul Hammond in "Gershatzer" from Atomic Rooster's Death Walks Behind You Jon Hiseman in "Time Machine" from Colosseum's Daughter Of Time Carl Palmer in "Decline and Fall" from Atomic Rooster debut Carl Palmer in "Tank" from Emerson, Lake and Palmer debut Bernd Noske in "Back from Hell" from Birth Control's Rebirth Alfio Vitanza in "Patetica-part Terza" from Latte e Miele's Papillon John Marshall in "Torso" from Nucleus's Solar Plexus I'm sure there are many more great ones out there-what are your favorites?

My favorites mostly come from the drummer who plays in the band from my nickname.

Neil crafts the best solo-
Portnoy's solo in "Once in a Livetime" is horrendous- he is MUCH better now.
Has Gavin Harrison done a recorded solo? I don't think he has...

B'Boom by King Crimson (from THRAK), would be my all-time favorite.

Bill Bruford does some nice electro-acoustic drum soloing on some live versions of "Indiscipline" I've heard, such as the one on the Three of a Perfect Pair video and the Absent Lovers live 2 disc set from that same tour.

Call me crazy, but I've always had a thing for Clive Bunker's mad and clumsy work out on Dharma for One. Pure insanity, yet with a constant echoing of the tune running through it. Personally I think he was the best drummer for Tull - and would've loved to hear him on say A Passion Play. Don't get me wrong, I think Barlow is brilliant and he fit within the band like a well oiled glove, it's just a matter of personal taste is all.
I remember once at a Roskilde Festival, where we played Dharma for One 24/7 The "camp" was this huge green felt carpet, that looked uncannily like a golf green. Everywhere lay beer bottles giving off that klingklangy feel of a bar. Then one day our roof collapsed(that is four supporting beams with a large piece of plastic gaffataped to the top), and we had to cut it in half, which made all traffic inside the camp look like people imitating dogs down on all fours One night we were warming up to go see Metallica, and suddenly our taperecorder(yep you heard me - a taperecorder, where you'd spend days compiling special tapes for various occasions) threw a fit and went into overdrive - causing it to play at an insane speed turning Jethro Tull into some freakishly cool Minnie Mouse music! Friend of mine, who also plays the drums, kept rewinding the thing whenever the drum solo of Dharma came on, and we would listen to this on and on and on. Sounded absolutely insaneStill laugh whenever I hear the track today.

Here's a few drum spots which just 'stick' with me (he he)....
Carl Palmer on Atomic Rooster's 'Decline And Fall' always hits the spot for me - also his creative work-out on ELP's 'Toccata' from Brain Salad Surgery.
Danny Seraphine on 'The Devil's Sweet' from Chicago VII (he gets 2 solos, one with brushes, one with sticks).
Michi dei Rossi on Le Orme's 'Truck Of Fire' from In Concerto (the guy's a monster).
Pete Leopold on Amon Duul II's 'Live In Jericho' from 'Alive and Well'.
Phil Collins' and Chester Thompson's Drum Duets are always great fun.
Andy McCulloch on Greenslade's 'Drumfolk' (Bedside Manners Are Extra)
Tim Alexander on Primus' 'Jellikit' (Suck On This)
Bruford's solo on 'Perpetual Change' from 'Yessongs'

The only drum solos (or duos, as the case may be) I know of that are worth anything are: B'boom - KC Tappy's Spices - Il Berlione
