I was looking at the cover of Frances The Mute only the other night and thinking how cool it is. I didn't even know he was part of making that artwork. Nice to know that.

I have his illustrated book "Hipgnosis- Walk Away Rene" on my dinner table,a tradition I have kept since the 70s! I am deeply shocked, what a talent and what a pioneer! His album covers have rarely been upstaged by anyone , especially recently. I am sure Mr.Dean and Mr. Unitsky are in mourning...I am...
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Hi,

It's really hard to put in words my feelings on this one ... because other than a couple of bands, there is no artist, musician, writer or deity, that has stood out more for me, in my life, than the work of Hipgnosis has been ... to the point that I even named one of my characters in WoW ... you got it ... Hipgnosis!

At first, the attraction was anything on the Harvest label. And right after ... anything that had a Hipgnosis cover ... and I even remember the weird ones, like "Uno" ... "Capability Brown" ... "Greatest Show on Earth" ... and so many others ...

Sorry, I will find better words and clean this up, but this is sad for an idiot like me!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Only Roger Dean is in the same class.  What a loss.

The whole era in the 60's and then 70's was massive for artistic break-throughs, and album covers were just as important and helped break the "hold" that many "rich" folks had in what was known as "art" ... and all of a sudden, there was new stuff that was blowing the masses and selling like hotcakes ... and if there is one thing that those rich'ers like it is more money !!!!

That said, and headitorials aside ... there were others that created massive work and became very well known, and some of them ended up in many Fantasy books and posters. And try to get the Shenken posters and the Fillmore posters today ... and it will rip your wallet pretty damn good! As time goes by, this value will increase.
