There was some quite vociferous outcry at the time of Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis in 1975. Some critics and fans were predicting a complete fade-out of the remaining Genesis members from the public eye. This we can now plainly see was terribly mistaken - BUT did Gabriel's pursuit of artistic independence and musical integrity most benefit himself, OR the new incarnation(s) of Genesis, who were driven to progress and further develop in compensation for his loss? Progressive (Instrumentation, Playing Technique, Technology), Compositional (Uniqueness of Structure, Melodic/Harmonic Development, Musicality, etc.), and Lyrical (Vocal Delivery, Emotional Appeal, Subject Matter, etc.) considerations are all on the table.

Myself, I will try to restrain from voting in this poll. But should my self-discipline fail, I would probably vote for a Genesis album, hands down. You still have Mike Rutherford on guitar and bass, Tony Banks (a master of symphonic keyboard work in the 70's) tackling 80's synths and analogs, and, of course, Phil Collins drumming it up like nobody's business. And my vote wouldn't just go to Genesis for the musicianship alone. Listen to Mama: depending on your interpretation, a solemn and unnerving ballad (?) sung from the perspective of an unborn child who's best friend or worst enemy is his own mother; or the thoughts of a schizophrenic teenager with 'mother issues' who oedipally depends on soliciting an older prostitute. In any case, that's some heavy stuff, right there. I don't think Peter Gabriel ever beat that - not even on The Lamb.

I can't say that I like any of the albums listed but in general I prefer Gabriel's solo worsk to anything Genesis have done in the 80s

I'm possibly wrongly assuming that by Three Sides Live you mean the whole album and not only the studio 4th side.
From this point of view I voted for Three Sides Live which is still a very solid album.
If by TSL you meant the studio side only, I guess I would have voted for Duke, closely followed by PG's Melt.

That made me think of creating another poll (don't know whether it has been done before, I'l search before posting) regarding your Three Sides Live albums: edition with studio side, 4 sides live or both? Tongue

Overall, PG's work is the better, and Passion is still the best thing he has ever done.
