After doing the same with Steven Wilson and Riverside, it came to my mind to keep doing this kind of polls with expected new album releases. So this time it's the turn of BBT. Please feel free to discuss...

I don't know anything pre-Underfall Yard. English Electric Pt. 1 gets my vote with Pt. 2 very close behind.

When the smoke clears and the dust settles, I believe it's The Underfall Yard that's their best album ;-)

Every album they put out is great. I'll give some attention to Gathering Speed. Fans of this band should check that album out. Great opener!

English Electric Pt. One, I've really enjoyed this one. I still really need to give Pt. Two a listen, as it's their only record I haven't heard.

Wonderful band. I love all of the albums I've heard, but my very favorite is The Difference Machine. Terribly underrated, and so different from the rest of their discography. I almost wish they'd stuck with that kind of jazzy post-prog style, but then we would never have gotten those magnificent English Electric albums.
I encourage anyone who hasn't heard BBT's pre-Underfall Yard releases to give them a try. Gathering Speed is also excellent. |

I'm a moderate fan of the band, my vote goes to Gathering Speed, I think their latest albums, while are good are little overrated. The first one Goodbye To The Age Of Steam is very good in my opnion , quite diffrent then what they release next, my second vote.

I'd rate them in the following order:
1) The Underfall Yard 2) English Electric Part 1 3) Far skies Deep Time (meant to be an EP but it is over 40 mins like some of the classics) 4) English Electric Part 2 All 4 are excellent - but I can't really get on with anything pre TUY

When I got The Underfall Yard I had to raid the whole catalog. The only ones I don't have are Steam and the newest one. Everything from Speed onward are too close for ranking for me.

Though I like everything from The Difference Machine on, TDM is still my favorite and the standard to which I hold the others. There have been many improvements within the band, better sound production, and wonderful guest contributions since The Difference Machine but TDM has a pastoral Trespass/Nursery Cryme feel to it that I like much better than the more recent stuff. The three "epics" on TDM are all among my favorite prog songs of all time, especially "Perfect Cosmic Storm."

Far Skies Deep Time really needs to be added to the poll. It would be an LP on vinyl. The alternate opening track from the MALS release, "Kingmaker," is not to be missed, either. My vote still goes to English Electric (Part One), though. It is, for me, one of the most perfect albums I've ever heard: musically, thematically, lyrically, programmatically. Part Two continues to grow on me, but Part One is likely never to be bested in my estimation. I am very much looking forward to the Full Power double-album edition, which may help to increase my appreciation for the Part Two tracks. |
