Topic: One prog album from a non-prog band Posted: May 01 2013 at 20:00 |
I was listening today to this great prog album from 1976 called "Watercourse Way" from the band "Shadowfax" and I started wondering...Shadowfax became known on the 80's Windham Hill label as a new age band, but "Watercourse Way" is a prog masterpiece. So how many others are out there?
How many bands that aren't considered prog have a prog masterpiece in their past?
1) Shadowfax - Watercourse Way 1976 2) Split Enz - Mental Notes 1976 3) Grateful Dead - AOXOMOXOA - 1969 4) Klaatu - Hope - 1977 5) Rolling Stones - Her Satanic Majesties Request - 1967 ...others??? |

I'd say "The Seer" would qualify for this

^ “The Seer” by who? Big Country? Help us out here, some of us are a little weird, but fewer of us are psychic.
“Watercourse Way” is indeed a masterpiece, recalling in places Camel, Gentle Giant, & Hatfield & the North. On the basis of this album alone they should be listed on this site. I saw them live in 1985 and they really cut loose, more than on their Windham Hill albums, which I always thought were unfairly classified (or written off) as strictly New Age. “Traveling Underground” by Stories is one for the list, especially the tracks Bridges, Soft Rain, Hard When You’re So Far Away, Stories Untold, Earthbound/Freefall and the title track. Quicksilver Messenger Service - 'Shady Grove' (with thanks to dear Nicky Hopkins)
Magic Mushroom Band - 'R U Spaced Out 2' (should be under Psych/Space)
Sadistic Mika band - 'Hot! Menu' (well it's kinda proggy)
Stars & Stips - 'Nevergreens' (a post-Supersister project with R J Stips and some guys from Golden Earring)
Grateful Dead had a few Proggy albums (esp. 'Terrapin Station' & 'Blues For Allah')
Country Joe & The Fish - Electric Music For The Mind And Body

I was listening to a great prog album yesterday by a non-prog band and it got me thinking of how many others are out there. So, list a great prog album recorded by a band well known for any genre but prog.
1) Watercourse Way - 1976 - Shadowfax Shadowfax was known as one of the early 'new-age' bands on the Wyndham Hill label throughout the 80's. 2) Mental Notes - 1976 - Split Enz Split Enz was popular as a quirky new wave band from New Zealand after some early 80's MTV videos broke big like, "History Never Repeats", "I Got You", and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". 3) AOXOMOXOA - 1969 - Grateful Dead Certainly not known as a prog band, AOXOMOXOA was their most experimental release before hitting gold with the country-rock Workingman's Dead & American Beauty albums of 1970. 4) Her Satanic Majesties Request - 1967 - Rolling Stones The story I read in "Up and Down with the Rolling Stones" was that Mick was convinced that after Sgt Peppers everything was going to go psychedelic so he dragged the band through this bizarre & somewhat proggy album. Any others???

People have said "The Mollusk" by Ween, though it's not. Check out the song "Buckingham Green" though.

'Use Your Illusiuon' by Guns N' Roses. No total prog, of course, but with few epic 10 minutes-long songs and some unusual ideas in smaller tracks
it's really prog-ish.

"Heaven and Hell" by Joe Jackson. As great a concept album as any of the classics and definitely prog.

How ’bout this one from Dier Straughts…excuse me, Dire Straits. “Love Over Gold” has several tracks, really all of them, that venture into prog territory, esp. the epic, chill-inducing Telegraph Road, but for me it had the distinction of being the first album in about a year that I was inspired to buy while it was current, back in 1982.

"Garden of Love Light" by Narada Michael Walden. If you liked the 2nd version of Mahavishnu Orchestra (for which he played drums), Jeff Beck's "Wired" (on which he played drums and wrote half the songs), and Nova's "Vimana" (on which he played drums and wrote one song), and David Sancious's early albums, you'll like this, though it's always been frustratingly hard to find a copy. Other musicians include Ray Gomez, Carlos Santana, David Sancious, Will Lee and even Jeff Beck. This was his first solo album, and it's a pity he never made another like it. After this, he steered his career to a smooth R & B singer and producer for Whitney Houston and other decidedly more commercial acts.
