It was a great month for Prog. Yessongs was the first Yes album I ever bought and thus actually the first Prog album I ever bought. Gotta vote for it because of that. Second place goes to Tubular Bells.

I pick Space Ritual as well Thomas. Yessongs would be my runnerup.

I'm wondering if it was only retrospectively such a great month? To what extent were people already aware of Gong or Mike Oldfield before this month, for two examples? How much of Tubular Bells' success was due to being an iconic part of The Exorcist soundtrack some time later?

Yessongs gets bashed for recording quality, but I would have probably never been a Yes fan, or a prog fan without that album. Their studio albums, while good composition, always seemed thin. They just seemed like a different band. It was just so raw. The energy right out of the gate with the powerful rendition of Siberian Khatru. And when the berserker dude in the crowd yells, "LOUDER!" between SK and HotS, I can't really think of any other subsequent moment in live album history that came remotely close to capturing the buzz of the crowd.

When new albums are released, when new artists are still new, it is almost impossible to judge their quality and impact. Retrospection is what imbues greatness. At the time, I was not aware of most of these artists. In fact, the only one I really knew of was Yes, and not because of Yessongs but because of their previous albums (and I agree with whose-name-I-have-already-forgotten that their sounds were quite thin). I first heard Tubular Bells as a single on the radio, and most of us called it The Theme From the Exorcist or something some-such. If it was not for that highly edited version, I may never have heard of the album or of Mike Oldfield, who is one of my favorite artists. Or at least it would have taken me much longer to find him.

With one week remaining of May 2013, it's time to ask if I should do a similar poll for June 1973. I'll do it or not do it according to what your replies say.

I only remember hearing Tubular Bells on the radio because it was from The Exorcist. That in itself gave the song an air of menacing doom.

Many people say that Yessongs has a bad production and a lot of "post-processing", but it was a triple vinyl with Roger Dean's sleeve design that you can open as a poster, it's pompous as YES were used to be, so what's more "prog" than this?
Hawkwind's album was excellent and Oldfield's first world success helped Sir Branson in building his empire. The only "bad" album listed is Wishbone Four which is the weakest in the band's first years, even though I like "No Easy Road". It's only rock'n'roll but... |
Nothing poor about the quality of the vinyl pressing, but the CD is lacking. Overdue for a 2000's remaster makeover.
