I like both "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Ladies of the Road" for the inherent violence of Ian McDonald and Mel Collins' sax playing. Dick Parry was exceptional and evocative on both "Us and Them" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", particularly seeing Floyd live.
Please pay a visit to my blog...The Dark Elf File...a slighty skewed journal of music reviews, literary comment, fan-fiction and interminable essays.

Big saxomophone fan here.

Here are some great tunes where it features:

Buon Vecchio Charlie - Evviva la Contea di Lane:

Burnin Red Ivanhoe w/ Poul Dissing (Karsten Vogel) - Wallifanten:

Zappa (Underwood) - Gumbo Variations:

Van Damme Generator - My Room:

“The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

- Douglas Adams

I think you're right, it's not a sax, however it starts off quite low for a clarinet (although it's been a long time since my clarinet lessons). Could it be a bassoon or something?

What you hear is a multi-tracked recording of bass clarinet, a clarinet part paralleling the bass clarinet, another clarinet part playing a melody derived from the vocal line, and later it drops and the flute picks it up. Not a shred of sax in the song.

My list:

1. Starless - King Crimson

2. Arrow - VDGG

3. One More Red Nightmare - King Crimson

4. The Undercover Man - VDGG

5. Scorched Earth - VDGG

Gotta give an honorable mention though to Shine On. Solos to me are about musicality rather than technical flourish, and these are the ones that stood out most to me.

My Top 5 Floyd sax moments:

1. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I also love the acoustic version duet w/ Dick Parry on Gilmour's Live in Concert dvd; on Youtube here.)
2. Money
3. Us and Them
4. Dogs of War
5. Echoes (sax version - Live at Wembley 1974) - there's a wonderful remastered stereo version going around, even if Floyd didn't release it in their Experience editions. It's on Youtube here.

Well, I normally dont like saxophon at all, so I can deliver only one song. But thats my favorite piece of music of all time and the sax solo is incredible:
