I am a freshman college student who was first introduced to prog by his Father in the eighth grade. Currently, I mostly listen to either classic prog (Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Uriah Heep, King Crimson, ELP, Zappa, with some cult bands like Audience, Univers Zero, and Marillion), or progessive metal (currently listening to Borkangar's Quintessence album). I currently listen to mostly metal, but I also want to listen to more straight prog (for starters, any recommendations on which Porcupine Tree album to start with?). My favorite prog band, as well as favorite overall band, is Jethro Tull (Favorite Album: Minstrel in the Gallery; Favorite Song: "Aqualung").

Aside from prog, I also enjoy metal, some post punk, anime (as indicated by username and picture; favorites are Hellsing, Fist of the North Star, and One Piece), tabletop gaming (Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40,000Magic: The Gathering, and the like), Paleontology, Biology, History, Religion/Mythology, scientific skepticism, internet browsing, fantasy and horror stories, and old sitcoms/sketch comedies.

I apologize for the amount of parentheticals in this post; it's just how I write (whether that's a good or a bad thing YMMV).

Welcome!

First off i'd like to recommend  some PT (Porcupine Tree Wink) records - i would suggest getting In Absentia and their live album, Coma Divine. The live album captures their earlier records with all the songs improved upon here. Thumbs Up

You have some great stuff listed there, but do you listen to much modern prog? The Mars Volta, Opeth, Riverside, Radiohead, Mastodon, etc etc? Shocked

I'm glad you posted such a great introduction to yourself and i hope you stick around and get into some new music here - prog or not!

Hug

I actually do listen to Opeth and Mastodon (though not much of the former and I am not too fond of the latter's post-Leviathan output). I will check out the other three and thanks for the Porcupine Tree recommendation. :)

The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath. The band is very consistent so any album is a great place to start. Most prefer Deloused in the Comatorium, but your love for metal suggests Bedlam. It's quite the craze - atleast for me.

Radiohead - I love In Rainbows, but OK Computer will work too.

Riverside - Anno Domino High Definition. Brilliant prog-metal without the instrumental noodling. Lovely vocals. Second Life Syndrome would be just as good as a place to start.

Welcome aboard (nice to have you)!

I agree with Horizons suggestion of Absentia for PT (my favorite).

Scientific skepticism and old sitcoms/sketch comedies (excellent)!
