Topic: Best Dream Theater album outside the Classic Era Posted: May 16 2013 at 14:58 |
Classic era being everything from Images to Scenes. Six Degrees and TOT were hard for me to put in since they're generally great albums but only having everything post Octavarium and When Dream and Day Unite would be boring, so these two were put in.

A Dramatic turn of Events for me. No more Portnoy vocals, DT writing as a band again (god I missed Myung's writing input), Labrie in his perfect vocal range, what more could one ask ?
In my top DT albums for sure, regardless of the period !

I'll argue to the death that 6 Degrees Of Inner Turbulence is "Classic era" Dream Theater if you must make such a category. 6Degrees and Scenes are neck 'n neck in my book.
But Alas, I shall participate in your poll 'cause I think it is a good one nonetheless. And my pick will be 6Degrees (Perhaps, as you could have guessed)
...Wait... I cannot vote. What gives?

I consider Six Degrees to be part of the "classic" period, but otherwise:

I consider it there too but I know A Dramatic Turn of Events would have won if it wasn't there.

Classic era? Not sure what that really entails here in this forum, but I'm not gonna be a prick and I will just vote. Now since there are a couple of albums listed in the poll that are part of the classic era I will go with TRAIN OF THOUGHT. It is their heaviest release and I've always had a soft spot for it. Overall, this is an incredible arm twister of a decision. All albums listed are so good!!!

Gonna have to say Six Degrees. The title suite solidified my love of DT.

8-a-varium. Almost completely solid, epic album with just a few weak tracks. And the best DT epic

Six Degrees. It seems like their most experimental, and there are very few weak points. I would also argue that it is part of their classic period. But if this is similar to the other polls of its kind, I can understand the definition.

As a whole, Train of Thought. It still has a few songs that I don't like so much, but they seem a bit more enjoyable than the ones I don't like from other albums. Black Clouds was somewhat close too. However, my very favourite disc from DT is disc one from Six Degrees, but since that album consists of 2 discs, and the second one I don't really like very much (except for War Inside my Head, which I really like a lot).

Almost impossible to choose between Six Degrees and ADTOE, but since I consider Six Degrees definitely a part of the "classic" era, I'll go with the latter.

6DOIT is the best of these but it is classic period DT, end of!!!!!!
I'll vote for Black Clouds - an awesome album and for my money much better than its successor.
