Popmatters has an article today entitled, "The 10 Progressive Rock Epics You Need to Hear Now." The 10:

1. Beardfish - “Sleeping in Traffic”(from Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two, 2008)
2. Between the Buried and Me – “Silent Flight Parliament” (from The Parallax II: Future Sequence, 2012)
3. Big Big Train – “The Underfall Yard” (from The Underfall Yard, 2009)
4. The Decemberists – “The Island” (from The Crane Wife, 2006)
5. Echolyn – “Mei” (from Mei, 2002)
6. The Flower Kings – “I am the Sun—Part One” (from Space Revolver, 2000)
7. Phideaux - “Snowtorch (Part One)” (from Snowtorch, 2011)
8. The Pineapple Thief - “What Have We Sown?” (from What We Have Sown, 2006)
9. Spock’s Beard – “The Great Nothing” (from V, 2000)
10. Devin Townsend – “The Mighty Masturbator” (from Deconstruction, 2011)

The author writes that "newer gems like Porcupine Tree’s Anesthetize, Dream Theater’s Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and the Mars Volta’s Cassandra Gemini are surely at the forefront of every prog lover’s consciousness," but that there "are plenty of other relatively recent epics that are either underappreciated or under the radar," including his list of 10.

Do you agree with this list? What would your list look like?

It's a good list that does have the lesser-appreciated, yet still celebrated, songs. Decent list imo.

Cassandra Gemini is my favorite song of all time so i wish that made it though.

I quite like Anubis' "The Passing Bell." That's the only relatively recent epic track I can think of offhand at the moment that I might have added to the list...

Duh! (Hit myself in the head.) And of course IQ's "Harvest of Souls."  LOL

It is a good list. I'm sure that there are folks that are on here that could come up with at least 10 additional epics that are as good or better though, but that is the thing with lists.

A couple that come to mind:

Marillion - Gaza
Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day of Darkness
Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape

Mei isn't just an epic: It's one of the greatest pieces of music ever written.

While you're at it, listen to the new singles from Echolyn:

I'm starting to enjoy Echolyn's The End is Beautiful. So far it's the only album by them that i like. Gimme a week and i'll be hooked on them.

Harvest of Souls an okay choice. The song is good, but some people say it resembles Supper's Ready too much.

I wouldn't bother with any of them
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I only know 6 out of the 10

Beardfish
Big Big Train
Echolyn
The Flower Kings
Phideaux
Spock’s Beard

and yes, they are all worth, but there are many others which could be on the list as well

1. Beardfish - “Sleeping in Traffic”(from Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two, 2008) - Heard it and it's ok, but far too long for its own good imo. Nothing really exciting about it either.
2. Between the Buried and Me – “Silent Flight Parliament” (from The Parallax II: Future Sequence, 2012) - Haven't heard it.
3. Big Big Train – “The Underfall Yard” (from The Underfall Yard, 2009) - Heard it, and it sounds like a couple of hundred others that I can think of. Practically Dream Theatre without the metal.
4. The Decemberists – “The Island” (from The Crane Wife, 2006) - Fantastic track, but not really an epic eh?
5. Echolyn – “Mei” (from Mei, 2002) - I guess it's alright. I need to hear it again, but I seem to remember it as being pretty good.
6. The Flower Kings – “I am the Sun—Part One” (from Space Revolver, 2000) - Zzzzzzzzzz
7. Phideaux - “Snowtorch (Part One)” (from Snowtorch, 2011) - Very nice tune, although I prefer the second part of Snowtorch.
8. The Pineapple Thief - “What Have We Sown?” (from What We Have Sown, 2006) - Without a shadow of doubt their best track to date.
9. Spock’s Beard – “The Great Nothing” (from V, 2000) - Zzzzzzzzzzz
10. Devin Townsend – “The Mighty Masturbator” (from Deconstruction, 2011) - Judging by the name alone, I should find a lot to like in this one, but I haven't yet heard it.

Mei, The Underfall Yard and Snowtorch (Part One) are definitely good choices. But there are some others (> 15 min) of which I think immediately:

In Earnest - The Tangent
El Infierno de los Buenos - Alejandro Matos
August in the Urals - Deluge Grander
KA III - Magma (I exclude KA II and Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré II here because these originate from earlier days).
Rogue - Discipline

Decent list but  I have never heard Townsend, Between the Buried, Echolyn- Mei,  nor Pineapple Thief....the others I own.
My 2 favorites from that list are Spocks Beard and Phideaux........especially Spocks Beard....The Great Nothing and At The End of the Day are both excellent long tracks.

Clap Good call.

I would have added something by Transatlantic, probably The Whirlwind.

So is this a list that is in vein of converting pop-heads to prog???

If so this is a list that I would not choose. Not enough metal. It's a little bit one sided.

I think I'd throw in, for the sake of diversity, ARENA's MOVIEDROME, GENESIS's SECONDS OUT ( especially the live version from seconds out) DREAM THEATER's OCTAVARIUM (for sure!) and i think someone meantioned GREAT ESCAPE by SEVENTH WONDER and IQ's HARVEST OF SOULS. I'm in total agreement of those to.

My opinion is that people who really enjoy pop music would really gravitate more to a NEO prog oriented sound and some SYMPHONIC. it is in my experience that Pop-heads really don't like harder metal sounding music a lot of the time.
This is why DT's 6 degrees would not fit here, but if it were my list I'd love to have it of course
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Par Lindh Project - Mundus Incompertus
Glass Hammer - Knight Of The North
Magenta - Man The Machine
Neal Morse - The Door

all those are 24 minutes + and excellent imo

struggling to think of too many others. Harvest Of Souls (IQ) has been mentioned but its a little bit too much of a copy of Suppers Ready for my liking.
