BTW Mark Craney was more than a good drummer, he was top of the pack. But I agree that Barrie was special.

A wins for me when it comes to original track list. My original cd didn't even have Teacher. But when it comes to remasters Benefit wins. Best songs are

Teacher
Witches promise
Sossity
Alive and well and living in
Play in time
Time for everything

Flyingdale flyer
Uniform
And further on
Pine martens jig
Protect and survive
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

No comparison. Benefit by miles.  Not that A isn't a pretty good album, especially The Pine Martins Jig.  But Benefit is Classic Tull!

Easy choice, Benefit.
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Mark Craney was a good enough drummer but Barrie was Barrie and nobody else was Barrie. John Evan defined the Tull sound and personality as much as Ian. Tull ended in 1979 as far as I'm concerned.

^mostly...I still like some bits of Crest of a Knave though especially Mountain Men & Raising Steam but it sounds so different to 70's Tull to be an almost completely different band.

I think if A had Ian's name attached instead of Tull's it would be more respected .... Still voting for Benefit though.
