i just feel these there men shaped funk from where James Brown left it, solo artists who made something more out of it. Sly Stone abit earlyer but Clinton and Wonder also have staked havey stitches in the carpet that is funk. Colour full albums, and songs that is adventourus and challanging.

who is your favourite

3 very good artists...tough call.....I'll go with Wonder due to his larger output over the years and general songwriting.

For pure FUNK, the master is George Clinton. He took soul, R&B and put a totally different down beat to it, filled with heavy bass lines, horns, synths and crazy a$$ lyrics, musical characters and attitude that defines the word FUNKY.

Clinton pretty much created a new genre with Parliament and the later Funkadelic group.

It is well documented that Sly Stone has influenced more major musicians than Stevie or George combined. Sly has influenced Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton (who is from the same time period as Sly).

... and Prince, who, amongst other things, took over his 'sound spelling', as in: "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again", a song which Prince covered too.

The run of albums from 'Music of my Mind' up to 'Songs in the Key of Life'  in the early to mid 70s is probably the greatest sequence of soul albums ever recorded.  So, naturally I voted for Stevie Wonder.

I am surprised that George Clinton has only one vote...

I agree....I always considered Sly to be more a soul/R&B artist than Funk. Stevie Wonder to me is all R&B, they both have a lot of Funk ingredients.
George Clinton to me is 100% Funk......as the song goes:

"Welcome to station W-E-F-U-N-K, better known as We-Funk, Or deeper still, the Mothership Connection.
Home of the extraterrestrial brothers,Dealers of funky music, P.Funk, uncut funk, The Bomb...!"

Stevie had little to do with the evolution of funk; he had some funky songs but so did a million other artists in the early 1970s. Sly started out more R&B/pop but was a huge influence on what became funk (and beyond). Clinton was the guy who made '70s funk into what it became. Of course, honorable mention should go to some of the people he was working with: classically-trained keyboardist Bernie Worrell; bassist supreme Bootsy Collins; and all the guitarists in Funkadelic.

I concur. Absolutely brilliant albums.

Like Eddie Murphy used to say, "Stevie, everyone say's you're a musical genius but that don't impress me.  You want to impress me?  Slide over and take the wheel" Wink
