Yeah, he used the Taurus to great effect in Firth Of Fifth and also in Cinema Show live. Funny thing is (unless I'm wrong), the Taurus were not yet commercialized when Selling England By The Pound was recorded, so Rutherford added the Taurus in the live performances afterwards.

I don't think a Buchla was ever used in a majorly known prog recording. They were used
more in avant-garde/experimental academic electronic music.  I think they also may have made it
to a few switched-on type pop recordings.  They were hard to use as a musical instrument,
more like a sound effects generator.  They also didn't have much in the way of presets.

You're correct, I just had a look on vintagesynth.com and production dates for the original Moog Taurus Bass Pedals ran '75 to '81.  I bought mine in '79 and later traded it for a Hammond M1 LOL...here it is in my 1980 bass rig...

The only keyboard I ever learned was the ARP 2600 and I found it a fascinating and versatile instrument.  Of course, not being a keyboard player, I focused on the synthesizer elements and how to make it create weird sounds.  Whole lotta fun.  My favorite patch we named 'oatmeal,' because it sounded like a big pot of oatmeal boiling.  I also voted for the B3, Mellotron, and Prophet 5.

The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I would like to interrupt this thread to say, as a keyboardist, and an avid prog listener, that the Hammond Organ is the most f**king annoying sound on the entire planet and it should be destroyed in a fire for all of eternity. I cringe every time I hear it, often putting me off the music altogether, and the fact that so many people have labelled it their favourite is depressing.

Thumbs Up I'm glad to hear this, I've always thought it was something wrong with me, not being able to fully appreciate the Hammond sound.
I voted Farfisa, because of Richard Wrights handling of the instrument. But I'm also an old Moody Blues fan so the Mellotron has a big space in my heart.

Keith Emerson ripping into the Hammond during an ELP early seventies performance of Pictures At An Exhibition is the most wonderfull thing there is to my ears.

The RMI Electra-Piano was also relevant by its heavy use by Banks (all of The Lamb) and Wakeman, as Prog electric piano I consider it more representative than the Rhodes and Wurly which were used in many other styles as well (a bit same with the Hammond).
As for the Roland guitar synth, I think that the 1980 GR-300 was as relevant as the 1984 GR-700, although it's not always easy to tell since many players switched to the GR-700 but kept using the G-303 as controller guitar instead of the G-707.

I think Emerson used the RMI Electra Piano on the first section in Tank.  Whatever he's using on it has a great sound.

Mellotron has my voice immediately - I absolutely adore its sound. And despite some voices above speaking about hammond sound ugliness I love Hammond organ too :-)

Can't argue with that. I love that sound as well and the mention of Sheep is nicely relevant given the public annoucement today about  the future commercial development of Battersea Power StationSmile

Just had a listen and that sounds to me like a Hohner Clavinet.

Even though "Moogtron" is my username, (mini)moog and mellotron aren't my favorite keyboards.
Yes, I like them a lot, but the Hammond organ is my favorite keyboard, followed by the piano (grand or not so grand).
I ought to have called myself Pianorgan instead of Moogtron

Yes, that's probably it.  I never think of him using a Clavinet and I think there is one
picture of him next to an RMI, but I could be wrong about that.

If I remember correctly the mid 70's ELP concert film "Rock and Roll Your Eyes" (which featured the full performance of Pictures at an Exhibition and other odds and ends) has Emo playing a clavinet perched atop the hammond opposite the Moog Modular.
