Dream Theater. It is the only band for which I give 5 stars in all their studio albums. Their live performances are always epic and full of quality, all its members (current and former) are acknowledged for their technical proficiency and skills as the instrument playing.

Tough call between a lot of these bands. I went with King Crimson because of their eclectic mix of music and improvisational live performances.

I'll vote for Dream Theater. Don't like their music, but they are seriously tight. All the other groups here are too.
If Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band were on the list, I'd probably vote for them.

King Crimson. The mix of inventiveness, technical prowess, and emotion is unparalleled, especially in the Wetton era. Their improv chops are such a testament to that. Might have had a harder time voting if Genesis was included, but I get the feeling I'd still vote for KC. It just would've been a more labored decision.

I voted for ELP because of their playing classical music in their repertoire. I also don't think any other prog recording is as technical as the first part of Karn Evil #9, let alone Emerson's Piano Concerto #1, but I could be wrong. The first section of the Endless Enigma is also pretty technical.

Dream Theater, by far the tightest band i've ever seen/heard (and also my favorite band)
I'd put Yes, Rush and King Crimson as close seconds, they are amazing too

^ In terms of musicianship, I also would choose Magma. But it's very difficult to have to compare the musicality and (especially) the technique of different bands all outstanding because there are too many aspects to consider. How to choose who has the best technique between Fripp, Petrucci and Howe? This is mainly a matter of taste, I think.

Whatever the lineup, KC has always had stellar musicians.

The big difference for me is that when I watch live clips from Magma concerts, I think "there is no way those other guys could ever pull this off" Gentle Giant, though, have incredible energy and generally play very technical music flawlessly

This is between Gentle Giant and KC for me; the decider was just to mess with the current posts. I voted GG just to tie them with KC (at least for now). Technically, they seem just about equal to me, while the stability of the GG lineup helped me vote in their favor. Behind them, I would say Yes & Genesis, with IQ and ELP following.

It's difficult, because whereas some of the bands (like DT) are very showy about their technical abilities, others don't show off as much or just make it sound easy (like KC, they play stuff that's as lot harder than it sounds).
I'm tempted to go KC, but I'm not familiar with enough of GG's work to vote.

Toto and Meshuggah is very alike, specially in terms of incorporating jazz.

But for me Magma has a muscality so perfect which rises to a mystical level! Therefore I would put Magma above the others bands here

'Musicianship' is a rather ambiguous term. Just speed? mastering key changes? techniques other than speed (legatto's, tapping, arpeggiating, etc etc)? Melodical greatness? Harmonic interplays?
Too vague a question for me to post any opinion.

good musicianship is being proficient at most of them and being able to switch between them , by the demand of the music, the setting, the audience, Like Steve Lukather who can play both fast and slow, play awesome chord changes and have good technique he can play legato, tap, arpeggiating and is a melodic MASTER, harmonic inter-playing can he do as well as also can most of Toto previous and present members
