Good pick! I love that he revisits the big Mellotron sound; although I believe it's actually a synth on this track.

^Glad to see a few of us (3) with The Family and the Fishing Net not only on our list, but as number 1. It's an ignored song in discussions, but it has lots of changes in its arrangement like Old Genesis while combining with it a world music sound. I've always regarded it as Symph Prog with a different vision, fabulous track.

White Shadow
Modern Love.
Red Rain
Biko
Family Snapshot

And Through the Wire

....lots of others, but those 10 initially spring to mind. Car and Melt are near perfect albums... even Excuse Me brings a smile to my face!

There are so many great PG songs, from his first 3-4 albums, but I'm going to settle on one.

It was about 1977 and I was in high school.  The world was a horrible miasma of Bee gees, Sherbet, disco, Abba, Fleetwood Mac and such.

Then one night on the telly there is this guy jerking up an escalator wearing a hockey mask (which in hindsight  he borrowed from John Cale), and he's screaming about passion and stuff that actually made me feel something.

So

1. Modern Love

Peter Gabriel and his music are a "one off" experience. There is nothing else like it. And the fact that he has had chart success only makes his story more astounding, because his music, when compared to other music on the charts, was some seriously weird crap!!
Yet his albums get fairly mediocre ratings on here. The threads get largely ignored.  It doesn't affect my personal life or anything, but....I just don't don't get it.
Gabriel is an "other-worldly" experience...in a good way. His music has "progressed" more than anyone's. Surely that has to be as important and vital as someone singing about knights and playing in pointlessly convoluted time signatures.
