Dave Stewart, one of my favourites overall. Not only for his playing, compositions and arrangements, but I also love his book(s) on music!

However, Gong were considered to be part of (or at least associated with) the Canterbury Scene [only a few of the artists and bands actually came from Canterbury, or even from Kent come to that - Robert Wyatt has frequently complained about the tag as he comes from Bristol]

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

A thread about Canterbury ? I'll take the opportunity :

Does somebody know where to find on the web the Whole Canterbury Tree, by Pete Frame ?
 I had a photocopy of it but it "disappeared" and I was unable to get it again (I tried to find it, but excepting the main branch "Wilde Flowers -> Soft Machine -> Matching Mole -> Wyatt", there is not much to learn in it.

(Phil Miller hasn't been chosen once ??? Too bad I can't vote)

Interesting poll that makes you think.
 
Sad to see that more folks did not vote for Daevid Allen ... there are two people, still alive, that have talked and written about those days, and they both have become the only true Canterbury ambassadors that still have the artistic gumption to live it out ... but they are so out there and esoteric that most people can not handle them!

Next on the list is Mother Gong -- ie. Gilly!
 
There are musicians that are nice, but in the end, there are only two BEAT POETS alive today, and some of us may call them wierd, old bags, and boring ... but they are lovely human beings that still speak well of everyone and everything, and laugh with you like they were kids!
 
I think too many of the other folks took everything else too seriously.
 
And now ... so I don't forget that the whole scene was not just weird and funny for the sake of weird and funny ... I will play one of the best ...

Daevid Allen/Gong were the first Canterbury related artist I heard, I actually bought a Gong compilation from a bargain bin in a K-Mart store down here....I have NO idea how they even came to order a Gong album in the first place!

However, Gong to me exists....in it's OWN universe lol! They're like nothing else, and have existed in many forms and styles over the years. I especially like Daevid's `Sacred Geometry/Microcosmic' ambient albums.

But I'll vote for Richard Sinclair...when I first heard `Grey and Pink' at the start of my prog adventure, I had NEVER heard anything like it. The thing that stood out right away were Richard's distinctive vocals! My friend (Archives member Stratcat) and I always (and still jokingly do!) refer to him as `the guy with the posh voice from Caravan '!

To me, that voice kind of defines Canterbury for me....oh, and he's a damn incredible bass player too!

Richard Sinclair mainly because of his amazing contribution to In The Land... (Golf Girl and Winter Wine) but Robert Wyatt is definitely up there
