Topic: 2 more under-appreciated Bassists Posted: July 24 2013 at 07:49 |
Both of these players are very under-rated, and not for want of talent or capability, most likely because their recorded output is very small, Helmut with two Triumvirat albums, session work on Jail's lone album, and his posthumously released solo album, and Mr. Stocker on the first two Eloy albums. I will not repeat my reverence for Helmut Koellen as a wonderful musician-singer-songwriter, just to say that he is my favorite musician, and always will be. Wolfgang Stocker is not far behind, though, with his great contributions to the early Eloy records. Who do you prefer?

What about Ian Ellis? After his great work with 1-2-3 and Clouds, he was in bands with Pete Townshend, Steve Hackett, and Ric Lee, as well as being a member of Savoy Brown and many others. A true unsung hero.

I love him in Savoy Brown's "Savage Return". Maybe for a future poll.

Klaus Peter - Matziol is probably my favourite bassist so can I vote for Stocker just because I like Eloy? I'll vote for Koellen because I prefer Illusions On A Double Dimple over what Eloy were doing at the time. I actually find it very hard to judge bassists ability wise and so I have to go with the music overall that I prefer.

Hi, Richard-that's an interesting perspective, and thanks for voting Helmut.

Inside by Eloy and Illusion On A Double Dimple are two killer album but the bass playing by Helmut stands out for me more so that's my vote.

Tough choice - Hans Pape played 'most of the bass' on side 1 of 'Illusions on a Double Dimple', the bass on side 2 is nothing to be scoffed at, either - Stocker is excellent, though Luitjen Janssen is my fave Eloy bassist (Floating being my fave Eloy album) - Matze is outstanding as well. Out of the 2, yeah, Koellen

I like them both but voted for Helmut because he had to cover more ground in a 3 piece band.
