Well there is a small minority that agree with you including me. Great album cover but the music is disappointing(in my opinion of course).

Not among my favourite albums either. It's got some great moments, specially Tocatta and Jerusalem, but apart from this I don't enjoy the album so much. The other short songs are just forgettable or plain annoying, and the whole Karn Evil thing... it's got some rather enjoyable parts, but it's got a lot of annoying parts too, and I guess it is this song were the album fails for me. As a matter of fact, I guess this is the song that ends up marking if someone finds this album to be a masterpiece or just an annoying album.

Brain Salad Surgery is an album that will always divide opinion. I am an ELP fan for my sins and BSS is their very peak as a band I have no doubt. The first album is quite nice but apart from Barbarian and Knife Edge lacks 'balls' for me. Tarkus side one was groundbreaking and definitely their best ever track but Side Two is patchy to say the least. Trilogy is a beautifull recording but lacks a unity of purpose somehow and fails overall to be anything special. BSS is what ELP was all about. Crank up the volume , the keyboard solos, the stupid fast drumming the everything. It was designed for the large stadia that ELP inhabited at the time. It was ELP coming alive like some demented monster. If you like prog with good taste then look elsewhere. ELP were the kings of bombast and this was their grandest statement.

What's so special about Steven Wilson's solo albums? I'm a big fan of his work in Porcupine Tree, but I just don't see why everyone praises these albums so much.

His solo stuff is better than a lot of PT output.

But I think we're supposed to discuss BSS

Sorry but im not a fan of the Album or the Band.

I think its about the edge, the edge is too smooth, Its not crazy enough, or rough enough, or .......enough.
ELP does do some directions, but in my view they never do any of them nearly as good as I should expect from a band allways on the front page of any article about prog. Where many other better bands sit at page 5, if they even get a mention.
Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

Insurgentes is absolutely stunning. It was nice to see Wilson experimenting with different sounds, with the album being more noise oriented with some ambient, post-punk and Scott Walker influences and the bits of his own alternative/pop style which we all know and love.

Oh, the discussion about ELP's BSS is going to be divided by this comments, however, for me "Insurgentes" was a nice album, but just that. "Grace for Drowning" was a very special album, something different and very good... a masterpiece indeed, I guess... but there's something that doesn't let me enjoy it as much as it deserves; I guess it's too subdued or something. "The Raven that Refused to Sing", now that one is my favourite so far... and I really liked better than anything I've heard from Porcupine Tree. I guess it's mainly because it is full of Prog chops, which PT wasn't really fond of doing.

Right now, Keith Emerson is grasping his chest, his doctor fuming about those effing prog fans discussing his client to death.

Guess he'll have to have surgery... which brings us full circle to the album in question.

It is a good album.   I do not consider it a particularly special part of my collection, though.  But the energy in the first 10 minutes or so of Karn Evil 9 is very special.  Most of the rest of the album as such doesn't really rise to that standard imo.

Well...his client should have died before releasing Love Beach.

My favorite part of Karn Evil 9 keeps changing. For the longest time when I was first getting into the album, it was the second impression. then the third, then the first, then I got tired of it, then the first, then the second, then the third... I think it's still at the third, but the first is edging back up. Too soon to tell if it'll overtake the Third again as of yet.

funny,
The longer this goes on, the more albums will be in question, the more abstract the debate, lets get another album, into the limelight.

I've been choosing just one classic album by each of the obvious bands, as those are what new prog fans will keep seeing mentioned, often without any elaboration.  I can remember seeing such acronyms as TAAB and CTTE and wondering what they mean.  It may be obvious to you and me, but it's not obvious to new fans of prog music, nor is it obvious why such albums get the attention they do.

After a while I'll make it two albums for each of the classic bands (because most of them have more than one classic album)
