I've just spent over £100 on Henry Cow box sets, but if it was produced before 1980 then I would be interested in hearing of its good qualities.

Most were in the Top 100, the others I often see mentioned here. It still surprises me that there's almost no ELP rated in the Top 100 (I'm not a fan, it's just surprising)

The Top 100 shifts an awful lot so its a mistake to assume its rooted. I'm pretty sure that only a few years ago Script For A Jesters Tear was a lot higher (maybe top 30) than about 80 something it is now. I reckon there are so many new albums that there is this constant rolling change with new albums coming in and then gradually moving down while more new ones come in and the whole process keeps going. If you were to stop any new albums coming and let the newer albums find their natural place over a period of 3 years say then I reckon the the top 100 would very different. I would look more at the top 250 as more significant and then filter out albums with fewer than about 300- 400 reviews.

It's the passage from the Pink period to the next one which I don't know how to call. Phaedra is the first of a bunch of excellent albums before the huge and forgettable production of the 80s which is made mainly of movie soundtracks.

It's atmospheric, a bit eerie in places, has plenty of Mellotron and they'd just discovered the joys of the automated sequencer basslines. I still enjoy their 1970s works.

Phaedra's not as incredible as it could be, but I'm definitely happy I bought it! Nothing particularly special, just some great electronic experiments in there - still prefer Zeit

And I love the primitive guitar racket of Electronic Meditation - the first 7 or 8 albums contain a great mix of different experiments.

What's so special about Hybris?
Sure, it has its moments but does it really deserve such a high rating? For me, there's practically no soul and the album isn't very risk-taking (it's all been done before). The constant progressive writing techniques (uncommon time signatures and rhythms) make it much less listenable than anything in the top 20+ in my opinion. The bookend songs on the album are pretty good, but that middle 20 minutes (and sections of Jordrok and Kung Bore) is/are not at all essential. I'd prefer the album without them, and as a brief EP really. I suppose it has a great sort of esoteric aura when you're listening to it, but that's where the excitement stops for me... Thoughts??
