I liked The Raven That Refused to Sing, but as far as avian prog goes the new Birds and Buildings album is a strong candidate for my end-of-year list.

I'm still going with
#1. The Gabriel Construct,
#2. Five-Storey Ensemble;
after that it's between Steve Wilson, Votum, Not A Good Sign, La Cosienza di Zeno, Brother Ape, Ingranaggi della Vale, Djam Karet, Flicker, Scarlet Stories, and Lizard.

I heard recently The Windmill's The Continuation and think it deserves a place too. Stunning music by any standard.

Also love Momentum Live by Neal Morse another masterpiece if live albums are permitted

1 ???? *
2 The Raven That Refused to Sing - Steven Wilson
3 Dimensionaut - Sound Of Contact
4 Ravens and Lullabies - Oliver Wakeman and Gordon Giltrap
5 Fright Pig - Fright Pig
6 Les Revenants - Mogwai
7 Finnegans Wake - Tangerine Dream
8 Big Big Train - The English Electric Pt2
9 Shrine Of The New Generation Slaves - Riverside
10 Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep - Spocks Beard
** Lifesigns - Lifesigns

* I'm leaving No 1 open as I think Desolation Rose could be my album of the year but I havn't heard it yet. I may change the order as well. I don't plan on buying any new albums for a while as I need to tighten my belt with Xmas coming up and I've spent so much this year without the reward I had hoped for.

** EDIT - forgot about the Lifesigns album which I like a lot. Need to slip that in somewhere unless the Flower Kings album turns out to be a massive let down.

I've "only" bought four prog albums from this year so far. I say only, because it's still the biggest haul of "same year" albums I've bought.

1. The Raven That Refused to Sing - Steven Wilson
2. Dream Theater - Dream Theater
3. Brief Nocturnes & Dreamless Sleep - Spock's Beard
4. Dimensionaut - Sound of Contact

I think the new Aryeon album: THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING will be great. :)

Catch you later. :)

Thanks Nicholas! ApproveI'll write down your suggestions for the next update Clap

All good. Did the survey, but you gotta include FATES WARNING's: A DARKNESS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT. it's absolute gold. :)

Update :-

Top 10 - Excellent
1. Guapo - History Of The Visitation - continued development of their heavy zeuhlish sound, includes an excellent dvd of their 5 Suns performance at NF.
2. Mirthkon - Snack(s) - Heavier than the debut but with the same level of zaniness, loads of ideas executed with excellence, for me the horns are the dominant sound
3. Miriodor - Cobra Fakir - Instrumental Avant of the highest order
4. Blue Cranes - Swim - Portland based Post Jazz band with a distinct avant tinge
5. Unit Wail - Retort - 2nd album from Frank Fromy's (Shub Niggurath) new band, has that distinct dark menacing Shub sound with a modern twist, step up from the debut
6. Pixel - We Are All Small Pixels - Norwegian happy poppy indie jazz, album filled with earworms. Tight intricate compositions.
7. Atoms For Peace - Amok - Radiohead's Thom Yorke project as such has a distinct Radiohead feel, excellent stuff
8. Rhun - Fanfare du Chaos - debut from a young French Zeuhl band - definitely Magma influenced and from the dark end of the zeuhl pool, great stuff.
9. Archestra - Arches - One half of the collapsed Rational Diet from Belarus, this is the more electric vocal avant of the the bands with chamber touches
10. Five Storey Ensemble - Not That City - The other half of Rational Diet - This is the more chamber half with the feel of Aranis, Julverne, featuring flute, bassoon, violin and the like.

11 to 20 (No Order) - Very Good
Empty Days - Empty Days
Steve Wilson - Raven That Refused to Sing
Chrome Hoof - Chrome Black Gold
Setna - Guérison
Zevious - Passing Through The Wall
Wyatt, Robert - '68
Caillou - Caillou
Eckert, Alain - Alain Eckert Quartet
Henry Fool - Men Singing
October Equus - Permafrost

The Rest - Good
Rabbit Rabbit - Vol 1
The Exquisite Corpse Game - s/t
Mike Oldfield - Crises 5CD Box Set
Mike Oldfield - 5 Miles Out 2CD
Ligeia Mare - Songs We Never Thought Of
Not A Good Sign - Not A Good Sign
São Paulo Underground - Beija Flors Velho E Sujo
Sanguine Hum - The Weight Of The World
Red Maque - Mythalogue
Sigur Ros - Kveikur
Jaga Jazzist - Live With Britten Sinfonia
Djam Karet - The Trip
Metheny, Pat - Tap: The Book Of Angels, Volume 20
Tatvamasi - Parts Of The Entirety
Herd of Instinct - Conjure

Now listening properly to that recent Three Monks album. If you like the first then you will like the second. Pipe organ fans this wayThumbs Up

Also been listening to Desolation Rose. Quite an intricate album with a nod to modern harder prog. Not sure it will be my album of the year but its a decent effort.
