 Topic: Your Favourite 1977 PA Ranked Album

1977 and things are looking up! The big dogs are back flexing their prog muscles with new albums from Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and ELP (though in ELP's case neither Works Vol 1 or Vol 2 got anywhere near cracking the top 25, coming in dead last at spots #41 and #42). Also of note, a certain mighty 3 piece from Toronto has officially arrived and followed last years #6 album with "A Farewell to Kings" at the #2 spot. If you don't like Rush, be scared...be very scared. They're here to stay! Once again, these are the top 25 PA ranked albums with at least 100 ratings presented in order of their QWR scores highest to lowest.

1977 was a pretty good year. I had a hard time but went with the Wind
|
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Lots of great choice but Enigmatic Ocean is a sensational classic. One of the finest jazz-rock albums ever!

So many incredible albums here it's almost unbelievable!! Must have been a great year! I'll go with animals because it's the album that made me play music but there is at least 10 other albums who could have been my favourite !

I haven't picked a Yes album yet for on eof these so I could go with Going for the One or possibly Aja, Animals, Ocean, Geese and the Ghost, even Point of Know Return. I actually haven't heard of National Health, so thats something new to check out!

Extremely tough one for me; but I'll go with Animals, probably my favourite Floyd album. Very close are Genesis, Yes, Kansas, Supertramp, Tull and Rush. This is one of the tightest contests for me as I could've voted for many here!

Very tough choice this year as I rank the albums from Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Rush, & Grobschnitt very strong 4 star equals each with great songs. The only way to choose a fave is to eliminate those with the weakest moments:
Do not like Wondrous Stories...Yes is out. Cannot stand Your Own Special Way...Genesis is out. The middle section of Dogs is tedious...no Floyd. Side 2 of Kings is weak until Cygnus X-1...no Rush.
Rockpommel? Can't find anything bad to say about it, especially the bonus track CD release so it gets my vote |

Almost went with Animals, a more obvious pick, but I've been listening to I Robot a lot lately and I'm continually impressed by how masterful an album it is. It's a lot like Dark Side of the Moon.

Too true! '76 was a bit of a let-down but '77 came back very strong. Here's a list of some big names that didn't make the top 25.
#26 - Quark Strangeness and Charm - Hawkwind #27 - Criminal Record - Rick Wakeman #29 - Before and After Science - Eno #31 - The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome - Van Der Graaf #32 - Rain Dances - Camel #35 - PG1 - Peter Gabriel #39 - The Missing Piece - Gentle Giant #42 - Works Vol I - ELP #43 - Works Vol II - ELP
Some other great '77 PA rated prog that didn't make the cut because it has less than 100 ratings:
The Kick Inside - Kate Bush (her amazing debut album) Earthly Paradise - Epidaurus Open Up - Ethos Galleons of Passion - Finch Happy the Man - s/t Listen Now - Phil Manzanera Le Petit Violon de Monsieur Gregoire - Mona Lisa Halloween - Pulsar : rated at 3.93 but just missed the cut with 93 ratings 
I also love '77 because it produced one of my fave hard rock albums of all time: Let There Be Rock - AC/DC
