While we're on the subject of Supper's Ready, these two tracks are widely considered to be highly influenced by Genesis's classic, in terms of structure. I wonder which track is held in higher esteem?...

I have to go with IQ here.

Grendel for me.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

IQ for me.....I've become a big fan in the last year or so , and while I like Marilion they never really clicked with me.

I like harvest a little bit more

I look up, I'm almost blinded

by the warmth of what's inside me

and the taste that's in my soul,

but I'm dead inside as I stand alone...

Harvest by a long way.

I liked Grendel when I first heard it, but to be fair I'd not heard any other prog epics by the classic bands at that point. Grendel is a valiant attempt at an epic, but for me after hearing Suppers Ready and numerous other epic prog classics, there seemed little point in listening to Grendel again..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I like them both equally as much as each other (and that's a lot), so no vote.

But the structure of the two songs is not even remotely like Supper's Ready and the subject matter and atmosphere (particularly of Grendel, which is very dark) is very different. The only real similarity is the 9/8 section near the end of Grendel and the fact that they are all side long epics

Of course both bands were influenced by Genesis, but if it came to a plagiarism case in court, it would be unceremoniously thrown out.

Well Harvest got the same "feel" in the first minutes and the ending is quite similar in term of structure. With the fade out and all. But it's a good thing, I really love Harvest and Supper's Ready is my favourite track of all time. I don't think it's a ripoff but there are some hints to SR and I love that.

Harvest of Souls.
As stated earlier, it has more of the "feel" of Supper's Ready than Grendel, in my humble opinion.
Grendel doesn't seem as "polished".
Welcome to the middle of the film.

I agree entirely. HoS is by far the better, the melodies are brilliant particulary the opening section.

I agree, and voted for Harvest as a consequence of that, but I would love to hear a more-polished version of Grendel.

I was thinking the same thing, and went searching to see if Hogarth has ever sung it live. Not only has he not, it seems the band is embarrassed by the track and have distanced themselves from it for a long time now. (I'm sure this is old news to everyone else, but it's new news to me, haha.) This is despite fans still calling out for the number to be played at concerts. I'd love to have heard H-era's approach to this track, around the time Marbles came out. Oh well, I can only dream...

How on earth I am only the fifth person to vote for Grendel?LOL

Erm..... I can't really put into words how much more I get out of the, admittedly, much rawer sounding, almost "demo like" feel of Grendel, than I get from Harvester of Souls. The lyrics, the witchy, stormy, spitting, wild, evil, feminine, angry, demonic and heartfelt delivery of Fish - the inspired guitars by Steve Rothery and the equally breathtaking snaking synthesizers that play oh so beautifully, almost duetting with Fish's vocals, and last but not least the childlike combination of the rhythmsection. Man.... no contest for me.

I wonder which version of Grendel people are thinking about? I much prefer the original 17 minute version (found on B-sides and Market Square Heroes ep), rather than the demo "Fairdest Studios version" released on the Script remaster.

I would imagine that most people are refering to the B'Sides Themselves version.

For what its worth Dark Matter is much more symphonic than The Seventh House so you shouldn't avoid it just because you didn't like The Seventh House (assuming that to be the case). Frequency is somewhere in between the two style wise.
