Could somebody recommend me some Early-Hawkwind-esque psych? I am a great fan of the messy, psychedelic and energetic sound of Hawkwind's first five albums, particularly "Hawkwind", "Doremi Fasol Latido", and "X In Search of Space".

I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

I seem to remember the early Nektar albums being in that vein: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=549

Amon Düül II's first two LPs are worth a listen, but maybe that is too obvious a pick since their bassist actually ended up playing on In Search of Space. The harder-edged, more guitar-oriented corner of Krautrock should be right up your alley in general, though: Check out the Ash Ra Tempel S/T and early Guru Guru too... in my opinion those two bands are even closer to the mark than ADII.

As far as newer bands go I can recommend Causa Sui, Colour Haze, Dragontears and Los Natas. Also some stuff that isn't on the archives: Check out early Monster Magnet up to and including Superjudge which includes a cover of Brainstorm, but especially also the 25... Tab EP.

^ Mr Mantis has done his homework !! I'd also include the band AKASHA - they do the space/psych thing amazingly well. Robert Calvert's album 'Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters' is almost a Hawks album in disguise. With lots of comedic segues throughout.
In more recent times there's a band called Architectural Metaphor, they almost out-Wind classic period Hawkwind.

Good call on Cosmic Jokers, Jean. That reminds me...

The Mystical might also want to listen to Tangerine Dream's first LP: It's a completely different thing than the electronic ambient they'd pioneer soon after, instead being a very wild and noisy guitar-based record with lots of drawn-out improv sections plus bizarre twists and turns in the composition. Kinda reminds me of a cross between the Ash Ra Tempel S/T (no coincidence with Schulze on drums) and the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality of Amon Düül II's Phallus Dei.

This thread reminds me of when I heard Hawkwind described as the most German-sounding prog/psych band to ever come out of the UK. Can't remember where or when, or who said that for that matter.

You are a hundred percent correct. I have been collecting and listening to the artists you've mentioned over 30 years and I agree with you totally. Also....I find the music, the artists, and the time period fascinating.

Psychedelic Moonsterjam would be another alternative. listen to this:

with 2 members of the first Guru Guru line-up (Mani Neumeier and Ax Genrich) this should not come as a surprise.
unfortunately the uploading program separated the "tracks" which originally flow into each other since this is a live album

Both Nemrud albums are excellent, although they are a little closer to Eloy.

"messy, psychedelic and energetic sound "....hmmmm. Perhaps Acid Mother's Temple would be something you might like http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2572

They are Acid Mother Guru Guru because the drummer is Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru. His style is in my opinion unmistakeable, There is definitely something tribal to his drumming.

I've listened to a few AMT albums but found them inaccessible. Haven't heard any AMGG yet, though.

I did like Koenjihyakkei's "Angherr Shisspa" very much. Maybe the OP would find this album to their liking. Link: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9410

Thumbs Up
