I'm sure most of you know what a hipster is. Usually they are known for liking indie bands. I'm wondering what prog bands they like though so if any of you consider yourself a hipster I'd be curious as to what you listen to. I'd guess that any retro prog is out and probably most symph prog. I'd guess that experimental stuff or Krautrock is safe for them though. Also, post rock is probably a pretty safe bet too.

I have never met any hipsters that like prog in general... or know what
it is. I've met couple that like post-rock and those sorts of things.
I've been to the dear hunter and circa survive concerts full of hipsters. Not sure
what a particular band has to do to attract them. Austin is full of hipsters and not a prog band in sight.

I can only think of post rock bands.
Giraffes? Giraffes! comes to mind first. ...And Steven Wilson's lyrics, though I'm not aware of hipsters that listen to Porcupine Tree or his solo stuff.

I only know one person who considers himself a hipster, but he's 47, so he grew up on the likes of Pink Floyd. I don't really know though.

If it's the right people I'm thinking of "those types" usually prefer Krautrock over Anglo-Saxon prog, Syd Barrett-fronted Pink Floyd over Roger Waters-fronted Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart over Frank Zappa, the Canterbury scene over other British bands etcetera. Basically, think of the Goldilocks zone between "too popular to be underground" and "too obscure to be mainstream" and you should be right on track.

...anything that's released on vinyl (or, cassette, tape, wax cylinder or sheet music)? I suspect that in a very short space of time digital hardcopy media such as CD, MiniDisc and DAT will be added to that list, if it hasn't already. Coincidentally, I powered-up my portable Kenwood CD-player yesterday to play a disc I hadn't bothered to transfer to mp3, even that seemed to be retro and hipsterish.
Being old, and somewhat out of the loop, I actually had to look this up to see what it was in the modern parlance, to me a hipster is a more archaic term that I could apply to any group of "alt" people. But even after reading Wikipedia on the subject it seems to me that most prog fans are borderline hipsters in attitude if not life-style or dress-sense - (erudite, knowledgeable and rejecting of modern mores), perhaps the only real difference is the not wanting to belong to the current social definition, which being self-referential makes it somewhat hipster, or at least close neighbours...

many hipsters like prog, generally the more modern, folk or alternative influenced styles. They seem to be the ones responsible for making prog (relatively) popular again.
Prog bands hipsters generally like in Murfreesboro/Nashville: The Decemberists The Mars Volta The Dear Hunter Godspeed You! Black Emperor Sigur Ros Between The Buried and Me Steven Wilson and PT Isis King Crimson Mr. Bungle Radiohead |

You know, that sounds about right. I think you hit the nail on the head there without going too far into indie or post rock territory and sticking with prog. Good job! ![]() |
