Well I could.Tongue Why though? You don't like the term hipster or do you just not like their pretentious attitude?
I don't like the term, to say at least.

The Boredoms too, due to the high "weird Japanese stuff" factor and the fact that you get to listen to heavy guitar music without having to associate with so-called white trash.

There are about 10000 types of hipster

I am only using this term because you are bringing it up, because I think no one really understands what it means so it's now used as an insult... even though hipsters have been around since the 1920s. The pre- Jack Keuroacs (sp)?

My next door neighbor in NYC is one of the most hipster dudes that I know, and there are multiple 'art houses' with groups of hipster people. Most of them like all the music that hipster girls like usually. I would have thought they would all hate the party music they listen to. But, they are all cool people open to most types of music to be honest. I have no problem with "hipstertype"  people.
I get along with all those groups pretty well though and like within all social groups, there are usually a few people that are awesome people no matter what people they identify with.

Now I know some people that I would actually consider them to be a "hipster stereotype."
Those people HATE HATE prog rock because most of them are late 20's to early 30's. I couldn't play Mr. Bungle for those people without them wanting to kill me. Some of these dudes are actually artists for a living so I'm pretty sure they fit the definition better than most people.

Some of them can't stand my band, as our music is too different and they actually tell me they want to hear a specific genre... which is silly to me because you would think hipsters would love stuff like Estradasphere.

Basically no one knows what this means and my post has no meaning anyway.

My 18-year old daughter can be properly called a hipster, but she is not very much into prog. She does not have obvious long time faves like her old man. Of the bands she has listened to, the closest to prog are The Beatles (she mentioned them a few times diring the last years) and Muse.

OK fine. It doesn't matter to me anyway. The term hipster isn't really important. It's just a name. The idea was to find out what kind of prog(if any) a certain subculture is interested in. I could have just as easily asked what kind of prog do hippies or deadheads like. Wink

^I know these hippies that I call my Death Metal Hippies. They are awesome. They got me into Blotted Science and Between the Buried and Me and all sorts of stuff!

But they are also Deadheads.

Some hipsters listen to music they call "prog rock" or "prog metal" - but that is a different meaning of the term.  It happened in the 1990s when alternative rock journalists sought a term for music of bands such as Tool and their ilk, they realized how this kind of music was similar to what in electronic music circles was called "progressive", and used this adjective to name the music they were looking for a designation for (which does not mean that this alternative "progressive rock" descends from progressive electronic music - it is only similar in texture).  They may have even been utterly unaware of the previous existence of the term "progressive rock".

So now there are two unrelated music genres going by the name "progressive rock", one that is considered outré (if they know about it at all) among hipsters - the one we are usually talking about here, and has borne this label since the late 1960s - and one that some hipsters subscribe to.

It is hard to say that hipsters and alternative rock journalists are "wrong" about using that term - words in languages always mean what they are used for.  It is just that this word has two meanings in two contexts, which sometimes can be confusing.  I have had conversations where we talked past each other and found out after a few minutes talking about "progressive rock", that there was not a single band we were both into!

^Ok so Tool isn't prog rock? I'm pretty sure they are heavily influenced by King Crimson. Sure they have their alternative rock moments but Lateralus is definitely a progressive rock album.

Hooray I am not a hipster, because I like Symphonic Prog.
When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Sigur Ros

You know, that sounds about right. I think you hit the nail on the head there without going too far into indie or post rock territory and sticking with prog. Good job!  Smile

That looks fairly accurate. I'd add Muse and Black Mountain and maybe even Maserati.

Zombi also gained quite a few fans when they toured heavily for a couple years in the mid-2000s.

A hippie? Well it's usually a lot of new age music that grabs their attention. Or Psychedelic Rock is up there.

Lots of hippies in my experience love DEAD CAN DANCE and OZRIC TENTACLES.

on the more electronic side. APHEX TWIN is quite popular.

And of course...not Prog but ENYA really is synonymous with the 'hippie' trend.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣
