Indeed, I don't consider Tool progressive rock, though I concede that there are some similarities - but these do not reach much further than the length of the pieces and the often complex rhythms.  Otherwise, Tool is very different.  There is no rich, changeful dramaturgy, only an ostinato onto which more and more layers are laid, providing a texture that thickens toward the end of the piece.  Also, I find nothing of the progressive mind set characteristic of progressive rock; rather, the mind set is dark, nihilistic and cynical.

The music of Tool is much more akin to post-industrial and noise rock than to progressive rock, and it tells a lot that rightist "neofolk" and industrial bands such as Current 93 or Sol Invictus have adopted this style in some of their works, while right-wing progressive rock appears to be non-existent.  (Not that Keenan himself was a rightist; I see no evidence for that.)

Hipsters dig Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Can, King Crimsons Red, and a few others. Pitchfork.com is the holy grail for hipsters in terms of what music they are supposed to like, and that site gives props to the above mentioned as well as Amon Duul II, Robert Wyatt, and Magma. They have rated albums by all these bands very high. Even yes's Close To The Edge garnered a 9 out of ten rating on that site. Check out there top 100 albums of the 70's and you will see some surprises. I have been accused of being a hipster so you can trust me :-)

Under normal circumstances I'd dismiss that as an associative fallacy, but in this case I'm going to take a punt and say, yes it does.

[sarcasm]
Hipsters use music genre names as a secret code.  These genre names are not defined by recognizable features of the music, rather the hipsters have lists which arbitrarily assign bands to "genres", and which they learn by heart.  If you don't know these lists, you inevitably misclassify bands - and thereby show that you are not a hipster.

And of course...not Prog but ENYA really is synonymous with the 'hippie' trend.

Oh no....no no NO lol!

Hippies and hipsters are totally different things altogether!

At least hippies listen to good music!

My apologies to you and Mr. Pianoman. Now what would be one of the major differences? Possibly less HEMP??
So, a Hipster would maybe be like Cosmo Krammer in Seinfeld. I remember Eliane, calling Krammer a HIPSTER DOUFAS one time. Anyhow, i think I get what you are saying. And yeah, the new agey Chakra crystal wearing individual is far different than.....

I don't know what a Hipster is, and somehow I'm not embarrassed to say it. There was a local band here in the early '80's called The Hypstrz and they were really good if you were looking for the opposite of prog, which I sort of was at the time.

But nowadaze I'd say they listen to Coldplay.

Making fun of hipsters - 2008

Ironically admitting you're one of them while not being one of them - 2009

Ironically admitting you don't know if you're one of them while not really knowing if you're one of them - 2010

Keep your mind open, proggers
