Tirill - Um Himinjodur - FAM005 FairyMusic 2013(AWM002)

`Um Himinjodur' (pronounced `Um Himinyothur') is Tirill's 3rd album, and like the previous releases, the music exists in a vivid, acoustic soundscape with harmonious cello and Mellotron arrangements, beguiling electric guitars, dynamic percussion and enchanting vocal harmonies. World elements stretch from Norse Mythology through Mediterranean instrumentation, to a universal sound picture with a core of Nordic melancholy - all in a delicate mix of folk, progrock and ambient music.

`Um Himinjodur' is a journey into the world and basic values of the songwriter, with an underlying question for thought: how would we shape the world, if it was re-created right now, right in front of our eyes? Which values would we hold on to, and which traditions would we discard? What would we consider significant, and what insignificant? Would we choose to develop ourselves and the world differently, or would we run the same show? `Um Himinjodur' is a musical attempt to behold the world in such a moment, from a totally apolitical and non-religious perspective, but perhaps giving some thought on what could have been different - if we listened more closely to the primal/primitive force of our origins. The album cover reflects this in a series of photos of stones in different shapes from ancient times, one picture for each lyric, where the stone is the symbol of archaic force and wisdom.

The name `Um Himinjodur' is taken from Eddakvædi (Poetic Eddaof Norse Mythology) and denotes a part of the Genesis according to the prophecy of the Seeress (Volven) called Voluspå. The title "Um Himinjodur" means "on the rim of the sky", and is one of two possible interpretations. The verse goes like this: "The Sun came South, sister of the Moon, cast her right hand over Heaven's Rim. No knowledge she had where her home should be. The Moon knew not what might was his. The stars knew not where their stations were." One can imagine that the sun rises for the first time, and is put into orbit towards the right - what we call the direction of the sun, or clockwise - and is the very beginning of this solar system put into motion. In the New Norwegian translation by IvarMortensson-Egnund, the word "heavenly horses" (himmelhestar/ himinjóðýr) appears instead of the "heavenly rim". In this interpretation one can imagine that the horses Rimfakse (the moving force of the Moon through the night) and Skinfakse (the moving force of the Sun through the day) fly across the sky and pull the sun and the moon into orbit. Both interpretations are used in translations and reinterpretations, and both give logical meanings according to the Genesis of the Norse Mythology. In the album `Um Himinjodur' you will find both versions used, in order to create another dimension and another poetic basis - which also appear in the cover artwork and several songs.
