Recommend me bands that use a lot of dissonance in their work. Think Gorguts, Gentle Giant, Behold the Arctopus, The Mars Volta... anything, really. (Except maybe those bands, since I'm already familiar with them.)
EDIT: I should add that it doesn't necessarily have to be beautiful. (There are two threads about dissonance already, but one has very few responses and the other is specifically about new prog. Both are closed)

Frank Zappa's "Uncle Meat" album from 1969 is a great example of this too. Lots of exotic dissonant harmonies in the wind arrangements.

If you dig Virus, their previous incarnation Ved Buens Ende are very much worth a listen.

Without taking into consideration rock in opposition, I'd say Third by Soft Machine is worth a listen if you haven't heard it. Quite long and a very unimaginative cover, but you might like it. There are some nice contrasts of dissonance with the typical Canterbury Scene melodicity/ness (?)

Virus is good for this. As well as Kayo dot but personally I'd start with earliest maudlin of the well and go forwards in chronological order as Kayo dot can be a bit difficult
Mirthkon Emperor's album Prometheus definitely fits the bill (yea it's Prog) Dordeduh Tides of Man (for that mars Volta meets emo sound) Secret chiefs 3 Sleepytime gorilla museum I recorded an album with the guy in behold the arctopus so there are a good number of bands he recorded that I checked out and these all fit the bill Time of orchids Zevious Dysrhythmia Indocrithine Krallice Check mick Barr and his output as well The flying luttenbachers |

And how could you forget Nowegian Shining? At places it's almost unbearably dissonant.
Naked City is another example of jazz and extreme metal crossover (or grindcore, actually), but at places it turns out to be a bit silly, I believe. |
