On the brink of metal and various other genres is Ulver's "Themes..." album from 1998 - this is a nice passage from the metal perspective to the more abstract/electronic style that could get you in through the post-rock side of things.

Outside of Metal, maybe Pendragon's later works? Their work before 2005 can be a bit cheesy but Pure is a pretty great album

Not sure what you are looking for outside of prog-metal but these guys embody several genres in their music and have gotten a bit heavier on this one.

Orphaned Land's stuff, and Space Gypsy by Nik Turner, should be easy for a metaller to get into I think. And for something a little offbeat and different, Teeth of the Sea's album Master is pretty good.

Challenge accepted. I definitely recommend Beardfish, Spock's Beard, Big Big Train, Porcupine Tree and Haken (especially their latest) in that case. They're all newer bands, but are influenced quite a lot by their precursors. They also all have excellent production that wasn't available to some earlier bands. Also note that those bands are very different, so if you hate one of them, don't write off the rest

Honestly, your best bet is to have a look at the top albums list of each sub genre and YouTube a few examples, you'll quickly get an idea of what you like and what you don't and from there you can ask more specific questions and we can give better recommendations.
The alternative is that I just give you a list of several hundred albums to work your way through.  |

Well I did list a few bands in the OP, and I was hoping people could take one or more of these bands to recommend others with similar qualities in the progressive rock genre. Also if people are familiar with general characteristics of Death Metal, they can make recommendations based on that. I personally think looking though top lists gives a very surface level view of music, and I don't really want to do that. Thanks for the reply anyway, alternative views are always appreciated.

Try Fates Warning, if you haven't already. Some Dan Swano work - Witherscape, Dan Swano - Moontower and why not Nightingale + the two Crimson albums by Edge of Sanity (but then again you might know them) Pain of Salvation is a must. |

Opeth, King Crimson, VDGG. Also pretty much any prog metal band. I'd say Pain of Salvation would be a good one since they bridge the gap between prog and prog metal.

I'm pretty sure the thread starter wants non-metal prog. Going chronologically through the discography of a band that went gradually from one to the other, like Death or Mastodon or Voivod, would probably do the trick best.

I would even steer him towards some of the Italian prog that has the same level of complexity as some of the more technical metal
