For those who love bands like TesseracT and skygarden, a side project from members of these two groups called White Moth Black Butterfly. The following track is both beautiful and catchy from the 2013 album One Thousand Wings.

Good one! Thumbs Up

Here are two tracks from German Gothic / Doom band Lacrimas Profundere for fans of Anathema. First track is from their 2004 album Atiadore, with smooth baritone singing with a rocking guitar beat.

This next track is from their latest album Hope is Here which like later Anathema is more polished, softer and refined. Plenty of good songs on this album.

Hope you like them.

It seems it's just myself & PhideauxFan posting in this thread (and clearly we have similar tastes). As this thread has some of the highest reads on this forum - for others reading this thread if you like what is being posted and you can recommend something similar (and the more obscure the better) then please post!

Thanks BaldJean for sharing. Definitely obscure.

It is easier to find the more obscure newer artists due to the internet and labels like KScope, definitely harder for artist releases before the millennia like the ones you posted above. I like the first one, sounds like one long jam session.

here is another obscure one that is not in the archives; this time from 1971

Friede and I have a lot of extremely obscure stuff in our collection, mostly from the late 60s and early 70s

two more obscure bands that are not in the archives, though they obviously belong there.

first the band Action with their self-titled 1972 album

and then the band Exponent with their album "Upside Down" from 1974

listen and enjoy

two excellent early 70s prog albums by an obscure Japanese band called Samurai that is not identical with the band of the same name in the archives:

I am not certain this can be called "prog", but it is definitely extremely obscure and extremely experimental. I'd say it is in the same category as Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica"

Time for some more discoveries.

Firstly from Greece, metal band Need's latest release 'Hegaiamas: a song for freedom'. Track is called Alltribe and is nicely produced with good repeatability. The video is pretty cool as well.

For a track with soulful, emotional vocals from Brendan Perry (ex. Dead Can Dance) from his 2011 album Arc, the track is called Wintersun. For fans of Nick Cave.

An impressive neo-prog debut album by UK band This Winter Machine. Here is the closing track, fractured.

In my opinion the best place to start with obscure prog is the seventies stuff. For one thing a lot of that stuff will probably go out of print soon so now is a good time to get it while it's still around. Other reasons are few if any of those albums are "kind of metal but not really" unlike many of today's prog. No cookie monster vocals. No compression of sound(ie Rush's vapor trails original mix), usually a real mellotron if you hear something symphonic, no digital keyboards. A lot of that stuff was pure. Back then stuff was either prog or it wasn't. There was not much in between like you see these days. Bands wanted to push the envelope and many times because it was new territory they didn't wear their influences on their sleeves(yes I'm talking to you neo prog).

If you're looking for obscure prog, it doesn't get any more obscure than releases that came out once on vinyl and have never seen a reissue on CD or in any way, shape or form.

My buddy Tom from RateYourMusic has his own CD Reissue Wishlist blog and although he has retired from the blog, it is still online and a treasure trove of some of the absolute rarest of the rare. List was updated when certain releases actually did find a newfound home on CD

on RYM he also created two lists prioritizing his most desired albums for resurrection from obscurity

Movin On
One of my faves that is almost impossible to find is Circus' Movin On
