Folks! You did not mistake anything?
This topic is called "More obscure prog rock", but not "The most popular performers".

Yeah, this thread does mostly focus on newer releases, some from the more popular bands, but there is also a lot of obscure prog that isn't talked about in other threads, and BaldJean has posted some pretty obscure stuff from the 70's here also.

Here is an obscure artist that I have been enjoying lately, T from Germany, from his earlier album Voices

Dr Wu23, do look a couple of pages back, BaldJean has posted a number of old obscure artists from that era.

No news for Phideaux, the band.

I only know that Phideaux Xavier sings on one song of the project Damanek.

OK - looking for recommendations for prog metal of the softer, melodic variety.

I have a love/hate relationship with metal, a lot of it I find repetitive (eg. most 80's metal) or too heavy or too much cookie monster vocals (some is OK). But there is the occasional track that really clicks and becomes a favourite.

But I find searching for suitable metal artists and their back catalogs harder than the more contemporary prog rock bands. Can anyone here post some recommendations?

Here is a sample of prog metal bands/albums that fit this criteria:
Alcest - Shelter
Anathema - Early work (I like their later albums also but I wouldn't call them metal)
Chaos Divide - Colliding Skies
Disperse - Journey through the hidden gardens
Dream Theater - Images and Words
End of Dreams - All I am
Ghost Brigade - IV One with the storm (the track 'Elama on Tulta' is heavy but has a great melody)
Green Carnation - The Acoustic Verses
In the Silence - A fair dream gone mad
Katatonia - The great cold distance
Lacrimas Profundere - Hope is here
Leprous - The Congregation
Novembre - Materia
Opeth - Damnation
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element Pt 1
Saturnus - Martyre
Soen - Tellurian
Tesseract - Polaris
Votum - Harvest Moon
Wolverine - Machina Viva

Here is an example from Shade Empire, a mix of softer & heavier melodic prog metal

Any recommendations for bands that are like these ones? Thanks!

^They're from your neck of the woods so I gather you already know of them but Caligula's Horse. Prog metal meets contemporary k-scope like prog.

Not a huge fan, nothing really grabs me from their catalog, prefer Arcane (also from Brisbane) although they disbanded recently. Karnivool is another Aussie metal band that I like and have seen them a few times.

"Here is an example from Shade Empire, a mix of softer & heavier melodic prog metal"

It doesn’t sound prog in the slightest, symphonic black yes, not prog. Check how the band is classified on those sites:

OK, maybe because I'm discovering an appreciation for metal coming from a background of having a mostly prog music collection I'm not tuned into the metal classifications. That Shade Empire track is also on the heavier side of what I listen to.

Maybe a better example is Leprous

or Soen (this is a particularly beautiful track from their album Tellurian)

My request still stands - do post any recommendations of melodic prog metal similar to the band list posted above. Thanks!
