Well, kind of an inevitable/predictable poll, but I'm interested to see which people prefer.
More importantly, how do you rank these 3 albums? How do you judge Haken's development as a band? Personally I really didn't care for "Aquarius", "Visions" seemed to be getting more towards where the band should be (albeit just a remake of the first album really), and I found "The Mountain" to be easily their best, and their first actually excellent album where Haken made a proper application of their talents and progressed as a band. Nonethless I was actually very interested in them right from the first album. I waited until "The Mountain" had at least 2/3 the number of ratings of the other albums so that most people who would listen to all of them could compare. Also there didn't seem any point in including the 2008 demo release, so it's just the 3 main studio releases. Anyway, thoughts?

I don't have Aquarius. Yet.
Of the other two, The Mountain pleases me more. But they are both fine albums.

Probably their most recent album (The Mountain), but I personally think they're very overrated on PA still good though, but not great

1. The Mountain
2. Aquarius
3. Visions
Their last year's act is also their best they made for now. They mature as the good wine, as it seems. I'm looking forward to their next album!

I'm just getting into this band, and have been enjoying them a lot. Just got The Mountain last week. Still, I need to listen to it much more, and listen to the other two a few more times. I was gladly surprised by how effective the Genle Giant - like vocals sound on this album. Of course, I had read about them on reviews before listening to them, but didn't picture how they would work within the sound of the band... and indeed it was very well. I might actually enjoy them even more than with Gentle Giant themselves.

I have not heard Aquarius yet. Visions was quite good, but just missed the 4-star level imho. All their albums were hailed as masterpieces by many listeners, and The Mountain is a real one.

Hm... I've been following this band since right before they released Aquarius so it's hard to say. All of their albums are very fine, and I agree that they seem to be getting better with age. I guess I'll say The Mountain.

Aquarius for me; The Mountain, although I do still really like it, is actually my least favourite.

Visions for me, though there are greater highs on Aquarius, and The Mountain hasn't really sunk in for me yet.
Don't forget about Haken's demo. It's just as good as their albums, listenable sound quality, and contains music not on the albums. |

For me too, The Mountain is their best. I find it a bit too high rated on PA, but it's clearly one of the best release of this year imo. I love Visions too, Aquarious a bit less...

'Aquarius'. I love it for its eclectism, and I can't say that I'm any fond on direction band took after it.
'Aquarius' was very interesting for me because of its unique mix of symphonic and jazzy elements with death metal growls, and melodies were very beautiful and exciting. On the other hand, I find Dream Theater influences on that album a weaker point, so it was a huge dissapointment for me to see that on the second album Haken conituned to explore their weaker (for my ears) side, instead of immersing into more eclectic direction. |
