New user checking in from Minnesota, USA. Been using prog archives as a staple of my musical diet for a couple years so I thought it might be time to become a part of the community.
Bit about myself... 22 years old, The Lamb, Crime of the Century, Aja, brown hair, blue eyes, ten fingers and toes, you get the picture.
Anyway, happy belated New Years. Look forward to getting to know you all

Minnesota, eh? Enjoying the cold?
I have some friends in the Minneapolis area... it seems like it's been quite chilly lately!
Nice taste - you'll find plenty of friends here with tastes like that. It sounds like you should delve into the Crossover Prog genre to find more stuff you like - I'll get you started.

Ahhhh it ain't so cold... *naked snow angels*
Thanks for the recs. Funny, never really thought about it, but I have found myself leaning more towards crossover type stuff lately. I guess there comes a time in every proggerman's life when you wanna lay off the bombast a bit (if only temporarily).

Well, I was talking about strictly within the progressive rock spectrum.
Never been very impressed by most of the prog metal bands floating around, but I'm a fan of death and black metal.
What progressive black and death metal bands? The likes of Enslaved, Ihsahn, Opeth, Leprous, Death, Negura Bunget, and related are some of my favorites.

I meant straight up death and black metal, but Death is definitely far up on the list for me (might actually listen to Individual Thought Patterns right now).
I forgot about Ihsahn's solo stuff! I was big into Emperor for a while and listened to angL and After when they were released. I'm gonna have to give his stuff another listen.
Haven't actually heard of Negura Bunget, but I just sampled them and I think I'm gonna check them out more.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Portal
I know, but I wasn't sure if you were interested in the straightforward metal's progressive counterparts.
And yea, Ihsahn is great. I prefer After to AngL, but all of it is phenomenal.
And Negura is great - very atmospheric and folky at times, but oh so good.
And I like Portal too! Vexovoid was pretty good, although I don't think it was their best.
