KOTEBEL Performs at ProgDay 2014!

KOTEBEL was started in Madrid in 1999 by Venezuelan pianist and composer CARLOS PLAZA. Unlike most symphonic bands that begin with rock music and add classical elements, Carlos began with classical music to which he added a wide variety of influences.  The result was a sound that continues to evolve, and has been compared to music as varied as GENESIS, DEBUSSY, YES, RAVEL, ELP, MESSIAEN, THE ENID, STEVE HACKETT, GENTLE GIANT, KING CRIMSON and CHOPIN.

KOTEBEL has released six highly-acclaimed albums since 2000.  It's most recent, Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble, took both the Jury and Pop Vox awards in Instrumental Music at the 12th edition of the Independent Music Awards.

ProgDay is very pleased to be presenting KOTEBEL on it's first performance trip to the United States.

ProgDay 2014 is the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Thanks!

LUZ DE RIADA Plays ProgDay 2014!

LUZ DE RIADA is a Mexican quartet that combines progressive rock, jazz, folk and experimental music. Formed in Mexico City in 2010, the band is made up of experienced musicians with long careers that have been part of different, outstanding Mexican bands and projects including CABEZAS DE CERA (who gave a memorable performance at ProgDay's 10th anniversary in 2004), SAENA, ENRIQUE NERY and JOSÉ LUIS FERNÁNDEZ LEDEZMA.

With influences that range from KING CRIMSON to ZAPPA, the music explores the dialogue between predetermined and spontaneous music. In 2011 the band released the first part of its trilogy, Cuentos y Fábulas (Tales And Fables), which juxtaposes composed and improvised material. Parts II and III will be released over the summer.

LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) joins KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA Rides Into ProgDay!

"This Minneapolis-based quintet may whet the appetite of Dixie Dregs or Mahavishnu Orchestra enthusiasts, but the ensemble's progressive-rock stance snugly fits into the newer trends of this genre, where dissonance, melody, jazz-like improvisation and odd-metered time signatures all reside on a synchronous musical topography...Toss in a touch of vintage David Cross-era King Crimson and it translates into a fluidly moving wall-of-sound with breakneck detours and power-packed soloing galas."
- Glenn Astarita, ALL ABOUT JAZZ

"...three gems that echo Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels era in both its timbres, intensity, and of course, fascinating intricacy. There are also traces of Gentle Giant, Echolyn, and Mahavishnu Orchestra scattered around, which is never a bad thing..."
- Jordan Blum, REBEL NOISE

With influences spanning BELA FLECK to ZAPPA to KING CRIMSON, THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA has been making a name for itself since 2009 with it's melding of fusion, prog and southern rock.  GCO calls it "Jazzgrass Art-Rock."  Five albums later the band continues to push its boundaries.  On Zombie Mouth, the band's new release, the sound has expanded to include vocals.

Past ProgDay attendees will remember THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA from its great pre-show performance in 2011.  We're very happy to bring GCO to the main stage in 2014.

THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA (US) joins LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) and KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

MATTIAS OLSSON and DAVID LUNDBERG bring NECROMONKEY to ProgDay!

MATTIAS OLSSON, a founding member of ANGLAGARD, met DAVID LUNDBERG, keyboardist from GOSTA BERLINGS SAGA, in 2008 while working on GBS's second album. Their discussions of collaboration became reality in 2010 when Olsson and Lundberg began to write and record what would become NECROMONKEY's first release, Necroplex.

Released in 2013, Necroplex exhibits a unique melding of electronic music, symphonic prog and post rock, created using an array of electronic and acoustic instruments, cutting-edge technology and vintage equipment. This continues with 2014's A Glimpse Of Possible Endings, the first of four new albums.

At the core of NECROMONKEY's music are the multi-instrumental concoctions of Olsson and Lundberg, spiced and blended with the contributions of guest musicians. The result is an eclectic, cinematic and wide-ranging ride into genuinely progressive territory.

NECROMONKEY (Sweden) joins THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA (US), LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) and KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

SENSATIONS' FIX at ProgDay 2014!

The story of SENSATIONS' FIX begins – and never quite ends – with FRANCO FALSINI.  Blazing a trail for DIY recording in his early years, Falsini employed a floor model mini-moog and a tricked out Teac 4-track as the core of his home studio.  His basement recordings became the launching pad for SENSATIONS' FIX.  Featuring Falsini's unique and meditative blend of cosmically laced electronics and soaring guitar, much of the mostly instrumental music from those sessions surfaced in 1974 as SENSATIONS' FIX's first official album, Fragments Of Light.  Though Italian, Falsini's approach to the music on Fragments drew closer comparisons to contemporaries like TANGERINE DREAM and POPUL VUH than the RPI bands of the day.

With drummer KEITH EDWARDS and bassist RICHARD URSILLO, Falsini took the music into a more ambitious direction resulting in the more aggressive and complex Portable Madness.  More albums followed, including Finest Finger and Falsini's solo recording from 1975, Cold Nose. Many of these albums are today considered classics of 70s progressive rock and space music.

The 21st century has seen a resurgence of interest in Falsini and SENSATIONS' FIX. Falsini's fondness for innovation and defying expectations resulted in music that has embraced prog, ambient, rock, kosmische and psychedelia, and the albums of SENSATIONS' FIX are prescient of electronic, ambient and post rock music being made in the 2000s.

As Nick Neyland (Pitchfork) explains, "Only after the dust settled did Sensations' Fix get their dues, primarily through DJ Shadow sampling them on The Private Press, but also in a gallery retrospective curated by Sonic Youth, and via Daniel Lopatin dropping a track by the band into a FACT mix. What's striking ...is how easily you can trace the central aesthetic of many future bands and genres... The bass-heavy "Left Side of the Green" bears the spidery cadence of post rock; "Dark Side of Religion" is an unnervingly precise proto-Spacemen 3 cut; "Cold Nose Story" acts as a precursor to the fuzzy yearnings of Bristolians Flying Saucer Attack; "Fortune Teller" predates Ben Chasny's astral-folk projections as Six Organs of Admittance by many decades...It might be a stretch to cast Falsini as some kind of indie rock soothsayer, but it's clear...that he was testing out ground that would later be explored in a great deal of depth."

Or as Joe Perez (Impose Magazine) states, SENSATIONS' FIX was recording "in their basement in the '70s what much of the music world wants to record now."

SENSATIONS' FIX (Italy) joins NECROMONKEY (Sweden), THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA (US), LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) and KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

ALEX CARPANI BAND Performs at ProgDay 2014!

Swiss-born, Italian-based keyboardist and composer ALEX CARPANI  started his musical journey at an early age.  While having recorded dozens of albums of music between self-released discs, electronic music, soundtracks and music for theater and multimedia, Carpani's breakthrough to progressive rock fans was his 2007 release Waterline.

Forced to recuperate for a broken ankle, Carpani used the time to write, perform and record all the music for Waterline.  Originally conceived as an instrumental album, by the time of it's appearance in 2007, Waterline also featured vocals by ALDO TAGLIAPETRA (LE ORME) and a cover by PAUL WHITEHEAD (GENESIS, VDGG, LE ORME). The album garnered a lot of underground attention from symphonic fans.

"This album can be placed without any hesitation into the pantheon of Italian progressive masterpieces, even though it was only released in 2007. Carpani's style of playing is reminiscent of PFM and Le Orme at the peak of their careers." - Eddie Lascu, Gnosis

"Fans of progressive rock and especially Italian Progressive rock are simply going to revel in the debut CD from keyboardist Alex Carpani entitled Waterline...The songs...have a very prominent 70's influence...going heavy on the classical and symphonic elements to drive the point home...You can hear the ghosts of many different bands from the glory days of progressive rock all over Waterline...It's what he did with those influences, and how well he incorporated them into his own original compositions to create something new, that makes Waterline such a joy to listen to." 4/5 stars - Ryan Sparks, Sea Of Tranquility

Waterline was followed by The Sanctuary in 2010.

"...I was quite taken with this album and rightly so. It is magnificent. I would more than just recommend it, I would say it is an essential Prog accessory." - Progmeister

"As Carpani is a keyboard player and a singer with a preference for the Canterbury scene, The Sanctuary bears a strong resemblance to musicians such as Anthony Phillips (listen to the intro of Templars Dream) and bands like Hatfield And The North...The Sanctuary is an album that immediately attracts the fancy of the listener but only on repeat listenings will it reveal its deeper layers, especially in the organ playing. Carpani has created my sanctuary for this summer, for sure." 4/5 stars - Andre de Waal, Background Magazine

"...all in all this is a memorable album that any serious fan of the genre must have or listen at least once...4 stars easy and recommended..." - Bogdan Olariu, Progarchives

The ALEX CARPANI BAND continues to refine and expand its music on 4 Destinies, released earlier this year.

ALEX CARPANI BAND (Italy), joins SENSATIONS' FIX (Italy), NECROMONKEY (Sweden), THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA (US), LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) and KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

ProgDay 2014: TRAVIS LARSON BAND and ZOMBIE FROGS perform, LUZ DE RIADA withdraws.

Travelers applying for an US visas worldwide have been having difficulty completing visa requests due to a global system failure at the US Department of State. The problem, which began back in July, has unfortunately left Luz de Riada without the required documentation to enter the US, with no guarantee that they will have them in hand by the date of ProgDay. For that reason, Luz de Riada has sadly been forced to cancel their participation at this year's festival. Both the band and ProgDay are very disappointed at this turn of events, but under the circumstances we felt it was the best course of action.

However, ProgDay is pleased to present two great bands as our final lineup announcements for the 20th anniversary show.

TRAVIS LARSON BAND:

With over a decade of recording and live performances under its belt, as well as a string of studio and live releases, the TRAVIS LARSON BAND has a long-established history on the fusion/instrumental rock scene.  While unquestionably a guitar-lover's dream, the dynamic power-trio offers more than just the expected display of technique.  Larson's fierce ensemble of chops is as focused on the melodical quality and soulfulness of the music as in the requisite skill necessary to perform the music.

"anyone who appreciates exceptionally composed rock instrumentals with a touch of jazz, informed by progressive ideals will find plenty to enjoy in TLBs latest offering. And if you get a chance to see them play live, absolutely don’t miss it." - Peter Thelen, EXPOSE

ZOMBIE FROGS:

Based out of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, ZOMBIE FROGS is an instrumental quintet that has been compared to bands like DREAM THEATER and SCALE THE SUMMIT. However the band's use of piano and keys adds an almost romantic classicism at times that sets them apart from bands usually working this area of music. With a mix of progressive metal, symphonic rock and fusion, ZOMBIE FROGS opening set will definitely be a wake up call for ProgDay's 20th edition.

TRAVIS LARSON BAND (US) and ZOMBIE FROGS (US) will join ALEX CARPANI BAND (Italy) with DAVID JACKSON, BACKHAND (Venezuela), SENSATIONS' FIX (Italy), NECROMONKEY (Sweden), THE GALACTIC COWBOY ORCHESTRA (US), LUZ DE RIADA (Mexico) and KOTEBEL (Spain) at ProgDay 2014, the 20th Anniversary of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  ProgDay 2014 will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  To hear music and for more information about this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Thanks.
