Dream Theater for me.
they introduced me to the world of prog and there was a time where i loved almost every album by them.

(it seems to me, that it is not very "cool" to vote for DT nowadays^^) Wink

It's just a ride... <3

And both Miles and Frank are massive in the history of the art form. The other 2 are nowhere near. But again, this has become a fan poll based on favoritism, by folks that never even heard Miles or Frank, but they voted for their favorite band.

But it is sad to see both Frank and Miles dis-respected given their amount of work and respect that they deserve, and will not get pn a board where many of its folks do not have the musical open-ness to even realize what it took to create monster musicians like them!

Kansas and Dream Theater are both incredibly hard working groups, don't get me wrong, and I enjoy their music. However When I listen to Miles or Zappa I get the impression that they really poured everything they had into their music, especially with their classic gems. I don't really get that with the other two.

Miles Davis.  Sketches of Spain, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Kind of Blue, Dark Magus, In a Silent Way.  I could go on.  He was absolutely brilliant.  Zappa was too.  But Miles gets the edge for me.

Not very familiar with Davis, Zappa or Kansas, and DT I'm not crazy about, so no vote.

Pretty soon there will be a poll about Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber being prog!

Look, somewhere along the way, you have to say ... time out! This is not right!

The public has been right as much as it has been wrong many times, and it is a 50/50 thing. I'm not pro or against it, but being a die-hard replicant fighter from Roy's camp, I wish that some folks would not categorize great artists to folks that are nowhere near that level, in stature, composition, and total work.

You might as well redo your poll and say that Beethoven is crap! And you're gonna compare him to the Beatles next! How original! How clever! Another pop poll that tells you nothing about the art and the work! Or start another poll that John Lennon was more famous than Jesus!

It's your choice, of course!

Respect the art form or kill it.

AND IN MY BOOK, YOU ARE NOT HELPING SUBSTANTIATE THE PROGRESSIVE WORK OF THIS BOARD. You are lowering its ability, and potential.

Allrighty then..........
Zappa and Davis are simply way cool ............Kansas and DT aren't in the same league imo....but I would rather listen to Kansas any day of the week since DT simply give me a headache after one or two 'songs'.

Everyone can consider this a place for discussion on any of the four, or comparisons between any of them.

amirite?

Yeah, pretty much.  They certainly were more popular here several years ago, or at least you'd see more discussion of them.  I almost never see them brought up anymore.

Very true...I suspect most jumped onto the DT specific forums, the last two albums are just blahh....There is nothing really new or exciting about them anymore.

Maybe Portnoy was right, take a break. Sorry to hijack this thread, but just the other night I was watching TMS and one of the guests was David Draiman, when asked by Trunk he articulated very well why Disturbed went on hiatus in 2012, I don't follow Disturbed music but his explanation was damn good, he comes across as a very good speaker.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Totally agree with you regarding DT.
