The crisis takes another turn with a local politician being killed in Sloviansk and the Vice News reporter being held captive by the local pro-Russian militia. De-escalation my ass....

I would guess that who ever did this is trying to provoke a reaction and give Putin the opportunity or excuse to intervene in some way - depending on how far he wants to go. Pretending to protect 'Russians' .  He's a C*nt.

I wouldn't go that far, it's more than just a one-way street here... Both sides (US and Russia) are responsible for the chest pounding and the destruction of peace in the region. The Right Sector looookkk like real peacekeepers.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain on Wednesday scrambled Typhoon fighter jets to see off Russian military planes flying close to its airspace off the coast of Scotland, a spokeswoman from the defence ministry said."There were unidentified aircraft flying near the north of Scotland," the spokeswoman told Reuters, saying Britain's Royal Air Force had later identified them as Russian.

"They were flying in international airspace at all times, they didn't go into UK sovereign airspace," she added, saying there had been eight similar incidents in 2013.

Local media reported there were two Russian planes, believed to be Tupolev-95s, which had turned away and flown towards Scandinavia after being contacted by the British jets.

Defence experts says Russia uses such surveillance flights to remind the world of its military might and to probe other countries' air defence systems.

I'm not bigging up Putin here, but to be fair he isn't doing anything we wouldn't do in his position. Let's not forget also that the government that was overthrown by a coup - yes it was a coup - in Kiev, was democratically elected.

Rescinded! Now coming out it appears very likely this was a false flag, thank god.

Typical American propaganda. Smearing Russia like it's nothing. The coverage during the Sochi Olympics was almost sickening.
Because Russia is totally a saintLOL

I have already said that the kids and old womans as beggars on the streets of Moscow are the result of "transition" and "shock therapies"; earlier, in socialism, it did not exist. The government was worried about the working class and retirees, so if someone was begging, that one was ready for jail. So that there can not be any comparison with the West. Also, what is the monthly amount of social support in the U.S.? that could be only a "wealth" for poor people in Putin's Russia; I mind you that Moscow is more expensive city than Boulder, Colorado.

Well it's more like a comparison. We here in the US live in a much wealthier country than Russia and we have ridiculous amounts of crime and poverty too. In fact, much more so than many other industrialized countries. I'll take for example my drive from upstate New York through Niagara Falls to the other side in Canada. It's really like night and day between lower Ontario and upstate New York. A first world country and a 2nd world country.... The infrastructure here in the States is really crumbling....

I made that journey in a Greyhound (NYC to Niagra). Must have been about 8 hours with three stops. Horrendous journey on a filthy bus. Won't be doing that again!

Can't say much about upstate New York though. Looked ok to me, although I overheard numerous unfavourable comments about Buffalo from fellow travelers that day.

I live in the Northeast and the shape of some of these roads, bridges and other infrastructure is crumbling... Much to say. My friend broke the front of his car (his axle and both wheels) on a very common pothole here in Chestnut Hill (One of the wealthiest communities in the entire Northeast).. If Chestnut Hill has potholes and bad roads, imagine where all of our multiple trillion dollars in taxpayer money is going to Angry

Not that we don't need to really to address serious infrastructure deficiencies, but we just came off a really horrible winter and all the local roads in the Northeast are in bad shape.  It's not like roads in wealthy neighborhoods are immune to this - I live in a fairly affluent area myself and the roads are completely beat to sh*t.  Plus, as it's not an interstate highway, pothole problems in Chestnut Hill are a local/Massachusetts problem, not a federal problem.

Mind you that I go to New Hampshire all the time and they have better roads than us in Massachusetts..... They say Massachusetts has some of the highest taxes in the union with some of its worst roads....

For those not familiar with Massachusetts, there's a lot of corruption here....

Just take a look at a lovely case of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig

Yup - my sister and her husband moved to Salem NH from Boston and the taxes were the main draw.  Although, they don't have trash service - that's a little too independent/libertarian for me.  :)

I understand, but it still impossible to compare with the infrastructure in Putin's Russia.

Quote (...) In addition to not ensuring the safety of – much less upgrading – existing infrastructure, Russia has also repeatedly delayed the construction of new infrastructure,  including air and seaports and road and railways.  For example, in 1995-2008, Russia only constructed 5,000 km of new roads (to 755k total – a .07% increase) and the total railways actually dropped by 1,000 km (to 86k total).  Over a similar period (1989-2005), Brazil increased its total road network by 65%.  From 2005-09, China constructed 480,000 km of new roads and 19,000 km of new railways.  What is worse, the average cost of 1km worth of road in Russia is $12.9 million, versus $3.6 million in Brazil and $2.9 million.  There are several particularly disgusting examples, such as the $7.34 billion, 48 km Olympic road from Adler to Krasnaya Polyana (that’s $153 million per km), the Western High-Speed Diameter in St. Petersburg ($142 million per km), and the Fourth Ring Road in Moscow, which rang up to $400 million per km.  Quality is also an issue – for example, 65 percent of roads in Germany and 38 percent of roads in China are reinforced with steel beams, while none are in Russia.  And forget about seaports – the sleepiest Chinese seaport handles more freight than all Russian ports combined.  To cite another example from the Olympic preparations, the lack of a logistics port in or near Sochi appears to be a growing problem that may require the use of Turkish ports instead. (...)

Wealthier? Technically? Probably because US has the balls to borrow. Reminds me of something Ron White said about the "prosperity" in the US: "We are broke. ... Oh, we are still writing checks like we used to, though."
