The amount artists get from Spotify is so mininal that it's completely irrelevant whether they get it or not. Depending on where you live it might actually be better for the artist if you borrowed their CDs from the library and ripped them to your computer. Plus that way you wouldn't be supporting a DRM'd service like Spotify that shouldn't exist.

Not exactly the point. ;-)

The amount may be minimal but copyright is about ownership of an idea or concept. We happen to get nearly nothing from Spotify et al, but I don't want anyone ripping me off - file under "principle".

Spotify is already ripping the artists off and people are rewarding them for doing it. If copyright laws were really for protecting the artists, there's no way that something like Spotify could be both legal and profitable.
