Topic: The new Steve Walsh album is METAL. \m/ Posted: August 06 2005 at 18:49 |
It's a nice direction for Steve... his screams are quite awesome. Symphonic, electronic prog-metal suits him well.
Samples:
Rise
Shadowman

It is a good CD. I haven't purchased it yet but a friend played it for me after the Nearfest gig with PFM and Proto-Kaw. A little on the short side time wise but it is a solid effort. Trent Gardner knows how to make Steve sound good. I really like how his voice is sounding these days. It is just too bad that it doesn't look like any new Kansas CD for a long while. Have to enjoy Steve's solo effforts and P-K as the new Kansas.

The River was a REALLY nice track... I first heard it on the bootlegged demos from the Power sessions.

nice album, been a long while since her released anything and "Shadowman" is realy cool ; especially like the title tracks and "pages of old". metal ? don't think so ; no prog either ; modern rock ; the orchestrations sound really nice, sometimes the rhythms are too electronic sounding
read some bad reviews about this album though

I dont like how Steve Walsh hasn't sounded anything like he used to in years. The music isn't bad.

I take it you're missing all the odd time signatures?

The samples I posted were the first two tracks.
In the FIRST TRACK alone, there is extensive use of 7/8 time, which is
practically a trademark of progressive music. Extended
instrumental sections, odd structures, odd time signatures, virtuoso
musicianship... this IS prog by definition.

It depends on how you define progressive rock, I guess. A lot of people think progressive music got to be complex to be called progressive but I don't agree. Other styles of music can have complex rhythms and structures as well.

Right, but the examples in this song are typical of progressive rock
more than any other genre. Consider that Steve Walsh is the
frontman of the most famous early American prog group.

I like Kansas a lot but this is not much like Kansas, is it ? I know Dave Ragsdale is playing on it and he was a member of the band in 1994 but just like Steve's previous record "Glossolalia", I don't hear the Kansas sound. But that's not important, it's a fine album nevertheless.

Yeah, it's not meant to have a Kansas sound (though the last Kansas
studio LP was damn nice), it's a Walsh solo project, one that I
personally believe is even proggier than anything Kansas has done in
the past decade or so.
Glossolalia was very nice too.
EDIT: I should mentioned that the last track on this album, The
River, was originally going to be a Kansas song, it was demoed for the
Power album. However, it's gotten a lot more complex since
then... as good as the demo was.

Listen to the first Two Tracks and the river so far. The Rise souinds like something Tiles would do so that does make it prog metal. Shadowman is for sure prog. A little metal thrown in on that but some nice acoustic guitar work and orchestration also. So far I like.

I think Somewhere To Elsewhere in 2000 had some of thier best prog songs ever in Icarus II, Mryiad, Distant Vison and Bysantium. I like this SW a lot After is a great song. The thing is it very much reminds me of anything SW or Kerry Livgren puts out. Diverse, exploring different ground in every song and in that respect sounds like Kansas.

I really miss Kansas. I think they got caught up in some bad management, they have the potential to be SO MUCH MORE.
I would not be surprised if Proto-Kaw are getting better sales numbers
and show draws. Which, ironically, is how it should be, but with
a heritage like Kansas', they should be rocking the world with amazing
prog, getting widespread distribution, headlining huge tours with prog
bands opening for them (1 hour for each opener, 2 for Kansas), and
generally making the prog scene great again.
I write long, long sentences.

Heh, not a chance. Kansas actually draws pretty large amounts of people to their shows (certainly more than most prog bands), since they were a very popular classic rock band. Every Kansas show I've been to has had at least several hundred people there. And Phil Ehart has been their manager for years now, so I guess you can blame him if you think they have bad management.
