does anyone know when that song was recorded? I know that it was first published as the B-side of the "I Know What I Like" single, but the sound of the song is just like the sound of "Nursery Cryme"; the song would fit perfectly on that album and on no other. so my surmise is that it was recorded at about the same time but for some reason did not get on the album. does anybody know more about this?

The song had been performed by Genesis since 1970 but was not recorded until the Foxtrot sessions in 1972

Twilight Alehouse was recorded during the Foxtrot sessions (1972), but the composition came from 1970 (probably during the creation of Trespass). The song was already played during the Trespass Tour (1970-1971).However, there's an interesting fact that complicates the answer: the refrain of TA is a quote of From Genesis to Revelation's The Serpent introduction (recorded in 1968 and released in 1969)! Probably, that's was an embryonic version of the song. Source: my vast knowledge about prog.

^ Yep, FGTR has a Twilight Alehouse riff intro on 'The Serpent', and it does sound like it's from around Nursery Cryme. Just love when Banks de-tunes his Hammond at the end !!......and it's quite the heavy song too
