List some covers of progressive songs! It can be a prog band covering another prog band, a prog band covering a pop song, a cover band that you think is awesome, or even a pop band covering a prog band. Proto prog covers and revisited/covers of themselves are also relevant. Anything along those lines. It's gotta be a cover that you enjoy, though, so no Ozzy covering Schizoid Man.
Here's a few to get you thinking: Some people are going to hate me for posting this one. Bring on the flak! |

As I recall you didn't like this one, but sticking with a theme: And another one from a sort of unlikely source that you may not have heard before: Edited by rushfan4 - February 12 2014 at 09:01 |

Here's a little known side project of echolyn called Always Almost, with Brett Kull (gtr, voc), Ray Weston (bass, voc), and Paul Ramsey (drums). Actually, it wasn't so much a side project because echolyn had pretty much broken up at the time. This was to be a new beginning by a trimmed down band, but it didn't seem to take off. They made a couple of fairly accessible albums that were pretty good.
This is a cover of a Gentle Giant tune called Aspirations, and they stretch it out a bit. The jam at the end is especially good.

I love Wakeman's version of "Eleanor Rigby"... I wish he'd done it with vocals. I also think Yes were great at doing covers in their earlier days, completely transforming the songs into their own proggier stile (even though they themselves had not become full blown prog yet)... however, I'm afraid I don't really like those particular songs so much, I love and recognize the way they worked them, but in the end the songs just aren't ones I do enjoy.

I think the Yes cover of "America" (originally by Simon & Garfunkel) deserves mention. Also, the Transatlantic cover of Procol Harum's "In Held ('Twas) In I"...

Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann is an obvious one.
Yes did great covers of the Byrds I See You and Buffalo Springfield's Everydays. On the YesYears boxset there's a quite raunchy and convincing version of the Beatles I'm Down, harking back to Jon Anderson's time in R&B band The Warriors. |

A few personal favs...
Greek band Will-o-the Wisp's cover of the eden ahbex classic "Nature Boy" (they actually recorded two versions, one with male vocals and one with female): Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine) did a lot of cool covers or Leonard Cohen, Dylan and French singers on his albums and live shows. One of my favorites is his version of the Jacques Brel classic "Seasons in the Sun": How about the sog that knocked Led Zeppelin off the top of the charts twice, once for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1973 following the 1970 Dylan original: Everyone does Pink Floyd covers and this one by Rasputina isn't really all that great, but given it's the only attempt I know of done solely by twin cellos it deserves a mention (they also do a bitchin version of Petty's "American Girl" but I couldn't find a good video of that one): |

I already mentioned "America". The latest Transatlantic CD has a whole disc of cover versions, including "And You And I".
