Topic: Rick Wakeman Journey (Original vs Remake) Posted: February 12 2014 at 19:26 |
As many of you know, Rick Wakeman has re-recorded one of his classic albums: Journey to the Center of the Earth. Which version is better? Original or remake?

I still want to hear the new one. As oposed to the other poll about Camel, I undestand this one will have more differences from the original, and am interested to hear what those ones might be. I have heard some of the newer versions, and being somewhat heavier and updated I have liked some of their new elements... even though I miss the orchestrations. So I think the new version might just as well have some interesting thigs for me.

I really didn't like the old version much, so any rerecording may be better, though I probably won't buy it.. I lost interest in Wakeman after his debut, which was brilliant.

I thought the remake was a mess, the bold themes of the original were lost with all the extra stuff which for me added nothing to the excellence of the original. The new parts sounded very weak, with the possible exception of the new Battle section. Rick Wakeman doesn't seem to be able to produce or arrange his own music at times - he needs a Roger King in the background!

Original---sometimes less is more--even when you're talking about Rick Wakeman.

I didn't listen the remake, but what I can say is that I prefer by far the shortened version live in Out of the blue than the original version with the narrator.

He's got many songs from the orchestral albums that he has arranged for playing only with a band, and has very rarely used backing tapes to fill the sound, he uses what he has available and arranges it in order to sound great. Well, maybe not always his arrangements are a success, but I wouldn't say he is unable to do good arrangement of his own music.
